- BUT they are saying that temperatures will drop like a stone and we could have snow by next weekend. It would be interesting to see Piers Corbyn's forecast as I think so far he has come right up to date. I have the cordylines wrapped up but not yet put away. I will see about finishing off the garden jobs in the week. The horses medium weight rugs will be ready to go on them on Friday night if it turns nasty.
I might have a good look at tonight's Countryfile five day forecast and see what that throws up.
Piers Corbyn is no better than the rest of the Daily Express fodder that feeds their OTT headlines predicting snow/rain/storm chaos or say we'll be hotter than the Costas when the opposite turns out to be true.
It is due to get colder by the weekend.0 -

Not sure where they are getting this 20 degrees malarky from because that did not show at all.
I have tried so hard to find that for the last 2 weeks when someone mentioned it and the best I've got so far for south east london is fog 'till Wednesday and 16c, which is not what I had in mind at all. And it's been wet all day today too0 -

yes RD he has been absolutely spot on the whole of october. Hats off to him as he produced the october forecast on 16th september. The november one is interesting and I`ll be needing thermals but also keeping my t shirsts handy. I am working on planting and sowing accordingly. There will be a serious storm around a certain area that month but that is all I am saying0 -
Piers is no better than many of the others out there, still waiting for the shorts and t short warm spell he said would happen mid month. Kittie would know if he's changed his mind about it.
It is important to speak as you find. I assume you don`t buy the forecast and apply it to where you live.
I have been wearing t shirts the whole of october as it is still warm down here. Dh has been wearing his shorts most of the month. I obviously apply his very accurate forecast to where I live. It has been incredibly accurate and we have based certain trips and events on that0 -

Sorry, I didn't mean it to come over harshly and no, I don't buy it, but do belong to a small private weather forum where someone does, not just his, including others too.
It's impossible for any weather forecaster to be right all the time. Anyone who was right all the time would be one of the wealthiest people in the world by now due to business/government/military uses.
Because of the UK geography the weather can be different as little as 10 miles apart, even here in London so any forecaster is likely to claim they were correct because somewhere in the UK what they predicted did happen, thinking more James Madden type here.
Lots of forecasters predicted a warm spell mid month for the south of England, the same as piers and if it wasn't for the fog it could have happened. If I remember rightly you live in a nice warm microclimate now, a great find and wonderful for gardening and I'm pleased his forecasts fit for where you live they will do for some others too but not everyone.
A few are going for the long hard winter (it could be, but not necessarily over the whole country ) but they do every year and it's these that end up in the tabloids as they sell papers. Many like James Madden who's a truck driver?/car mechanic? something along those lines, you may know Kittie? just seem to do a forecast to get paid a little extra by the papers.
But one of these winters they will be right. An eruption of a Volcano in Iceland next month for example, could cause a change in the general theme of the up coming winter.
It's the fact that our weather is so variable and often unexpected that the British talk about and I find it interesting.
I liked the winters here in the 90's, hardly no snow = lower gas bills.
My London forecast:
Novemeber...........cold damp and chilly, thermals will be required between now and March, daytime temps 5c to 12c poss snow
December............cold damp and chilly same as november poss snow but will be a mild few days that usually happen xmas eve and xmas day.
January...............cold damp chilly high 0c to 12c poss snow
February.............same as the rest of winter poss snow, or have highs of 15c and sunny.
Somewhere in the UK records will be broken for the coldest/snowiest/driest/wettest/mildest weather.
Same as every year here!
I just wish I knew then I could prep accordingly rather than all of the above!0 -
I was planning to line some curtains with fleece material but am now pondering this. There's been a lot of house fires on the news recently and just wondering whether using this near potential fire exits is a good idea.
May invest in some new thicker curtains for rooms needing more warmthDeclutter 300 things in December challenge, 9/300. Clear the living room. Re-organize storage

Fair point. I suppose usual advice is fit good smoke alarms and keep curtains away from candles etc... You can also buy fire retardant spray fairly cheaply (£12 delivered) if you are still worried.
The fire retardant spray needs to be re-done if the item (fleece or whatever) gets wet0 -
I need to find a way to hang my thick lace curtains underneath my winter outer curtains. I had some wires but can't find them anywhere...I feel a search of the spare room storage coming on....problem is that our windows are arched so the wire has to attach to the curtain pole somehow without stopping the other curtains from closing....hmmmmm
It was very misty in the valley below our mountain this morning and quite cold when we had to drive through it. I was on the back of my OH's scooter to save on petrol money and I was soon wishing I had put my leather gloves on and my warm scarf. I thought it was just me being nesh but he said the same thing when we stopped at the light. At least I was sheltered a bit sitting behind him lol
By this afternoon it was back up to 27 degrees so the jacket came off and I was in a tshirt again. The time has come for the layers to go on.
We still haven't got any firewood for this winter as no one has started cutting it yet. Cheapest quote so far was 115 euros a ton delivered . I was quoted 90 euros but then I would have to get someone to drive a lorry for me to pick it up and bring it home, which would have cost more in the long run.
Just having a nice glass of local red wine....I very rarely drink at all but thought I would have a treat seeing that I already have a headache...the wine is lovely and tastes of fruit and autumn“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come.
