Nope, same water, so only 10 minutes fuel in total. I cook on electricity, so it is a significant cost saving.I think I`ll be following you, seems such a sensible way to cook. One question, re chick peas, did you do the 10 mins fast boil first, then discard liquid and use fresh to boil before using the bag?0 -
I ordered a bag and have just cancelled it after some quick research on dried bean poisoning. My dh used to have ulcerative colitis very badly and that happened during the period when I was using and cooking dried beans a lot more than now. I am convinced that his uc was caused by the poison in dried beans

I do use dried beans but soak all night, boil fast for 10 minutes and then replace the water to simmer. The part about the increase in toxins due to lower temperature cooking, rang alarm bells for me, hence the cancellation. Dh has not had uc for 35 years now, ever since I changed the way I cook beans so I would be stupid to change my cooking method. The beans would be at well below simmer temperature in the bag and the beans would be potentially 5 times as toxic as raw beans.

I've always slow cooked pulses and never had issues. My mother has ulcerative colitis and is OK with slow cooked pulses (well she hasn't told me she isn't, and she's pretty good at avoiding anything that triggers it as she has spent a lot of time in hospital with it). Her UC has a genetic factor and I'm carefully monitored as a result.
I do soak (usually 24 hours because I forget), fast boil for 10 minutes, then leave them in the bag overnight/all day. They are HOT when they come out, not just lukewarm. I know MG did some testing with a thermometer when she was investigating thermal cooking.0 -
We've been needing a new flannelette quilt cover set for a few years, and found one just by chance in sainsbugs today - KS cover and 2 pillow cases for £30, and 100% cotton - feels lovely! Also bought a huge fleece throw/blanket from primarni, cream with big, faint check pattern,, £10. Never think of either of those shops for bedding, but was pleasantly surprised today!

I'm going to make elderberry syrup tomorrow - the recipe I have (MrsLW, I think?) doesn't mention ginger - how many versions are there out there, and do you just keep adding stuff and tasting until you like it?

Isn't it harder to dry a flannelette duvet?
My bed is very warm with normal cotton.0 -
Very chuffed at the mo, found a gorgeous purple throw to cover a double bed in cs for 99p. Spent £13 and got two dresses ( I wear layers
), board game, bag of toys and a fleece. Very happy with the bargains.
Got a list ready on Amazon for thermal glove sets and ordered ds2 a dinosaur Woolley hat. Fingers crossed it will fit him.
Slowly supplies being built up.
Been steadily getting colder, so been making sure is everything is in order for us.0 -
I know my grandma (who had icicles on the inside of her windows!) swore by flannelette sheets. All I remember is holes by my feet when I stayed. :rotfl:0
