Lovely medicinal whiff from my kitchen this afternoon as I made the elderberry cough syrup. But it's just hit me I forgot to put the ginger in
I only used half my berries, so if I make another very gingery batch, would it work to combine the two once cooled to "spread it out" so to speak?

There are lots of 'How To' videos on You Tube for how to make them and also Wonder Boxes too (square not round), Hope that helps, Lyn xxx.

I'm looking for single flat flannelette sheets, can anyone recommend some please? Also mattress protectors with proper cotton sides, not that horrible paper- type stuff that tears.
The trouble is that you don't know what they are like until you open the packaging...
Thanks for any help
Just lines sheets look good £15 singles, have used them and they have great customer service.
Asda have them but dnt know what quality.
Also Achica have some great bargains if you check every week.
I think you will have to pay john lewis prices for best quality protector, in between ranges have nylon sides.0 -
MrsLurcherwalker wrote: »TWIGLET did you sterilize the bottle before you bottled the syrup? Did you bottle the syrup while it and the bottles were hot? if not you may have got a natural yeast fermentation going on. He Who Knows says you should be able to treat it by adding 'YOUNGS BREW STERILISING POWDER' which you can get from a homebrew shop and it should stop the fermentation or if you have CAMDEN TABLETS one of those might work. He says you might save it by boiling it again and then rebottling it in a sterilized hot bottle. Good luck, I hate wasted effort and I hope you can salvage it, Lyn xxx.
Thank you Lyn (I'm a Lyn too!)
This batch is in a tall jar that probably once held (I think) pickling vinegar. The jar has a green plastic lid, it had a white rubber seal that I put on initially but it had dried out and had a small crease in it, so I've discarded it. I didn't sterilise the way I do jam jars, in the oven, just washed in very hot water and rinsed with just-boiled, not boiling water. I suspect the seal is a problem but I'm surprised it's getting bubbles on top after a week!
I'll try boiling it again and rebottling, and will get the powder recommended by HWK when I'm in town tomorrow. Please thank him very much, I'll let you know what happens!0 -
Thanks for that suggestion but I was looking for recommendations of where to buy decent quality sheets and protectors. I should have explained it better.apple_muncher wrote: »Would it be worth asking on freecycle/freegle?
I've been disappointed with the quality of quilts and matt protectors that I've bought in recent years and have decided that unfortunately the answer is probably to spend more....
(I hate the feel of that paper-type stuff that they use which tears easily)
Sorry Aggypanthus just notice your post. Thanks for recommendations, will check them out. Don't you have to be in business to register for Achica? Sorry to go off thread.

I got a quilted mattress protector from Dunelm which is fantastic, it has washed and dried a million times and it still unstained and looking like new.. apart from the bit I melted in the dryer

I got brushed cotton sheets which go bobbly and shed bits on my floor but they are so snuggly, they are being dyed when I find time and money for the dye!! They are much softer and warmer than the smooth cotton sheets.. but the higher the thread count the better quality the sheet.. so go with your budget.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

I sent back sheridan 3ootc sheets as they were scratchy, so avoid them.
Anyone can join Achica, some real bargains if you search, they have nice kids single sheets down to £6.50 now.0 -
MrsLurcherwalker wrote: »Hi GREENBEE I'm mightily impressed with it as a means of cooking pulses, I find even if I simmer them gently on the hob they always get softer than I like and I end up with mush and lots of empty skins in the pan. This was perfectly cooked chick peas for 10 minutes fuel and no attention needed from me. Can't get better than that can you pet? Lyn xxx.
I think I`ll be following you, seems such a sensible way to cook. One question, re chick peas, did you do the 10 mins fast boil first, then discard liquid and use fresh to boil before using the bag?
I have just made spiced red cabbage in the oven, a huge pot full and I am thinking that red cabbage would be an ideal candidate as I like to cook it long and low0 -
