barclays bank stamping 28th sept on a bill paid on the 27th sept

    Its not necessarily different banks that have different cut off times, but different branches within the same bank.

    My local Barclay's, just over the road, has 3:30pm as its cut off, but the bigger branch about 2 miles down the road has 4:00pm as its cut off.
  • cud of got around this completely by doing a FPS from current account to the credit card

    even after 4pm FPS would of hit within 2 hours and no £12

    works fine on all my credit cards

    Anybody who pays their bill so late is asking for trouble and deserves little in the way of sympathy.

    And the requirements Of the ank and card issuer are clear enough.

    I do think bank cut-off times are an archaic throw back to the days where they all shut at 3.30pm though. It's a bit like them saying "look, we're being nice by opening until 5pm but we can't be bothered processing your deposit until tomorrow".

    The technology exists to accept the credit on the day it's made without interfering on back office admin.

    The alternative is that they had stamped the 27th on the bill but the actual payment would have been recorded for the 28th. Is it not better that the inky stamp on the paper matches the electronic transfer of funds?

    If the bank had explained that the date was "payment applicable" as opposed to "payment received" then the OP wouldn't have been confused and upset.

    Banks are a law unto themselves.
  • If you were in the branch before the cut off, you should complain as there will be a banking case law that covers this situation. The bank should apply the transaction in good faith if through no fault of your own if you were on the premises to meet the deadline.
  • ok the knobhead comment was out of order ,i should not of put that,(sorry krisdorey) but saying the 27.5th of sept was a comment that you would expect a pedantic reply to a pedantic answer but stamping a different date on it is not right.the bank should have stamped the correct date on the bill,and said the payment will not be processed untill the next working day when i signed for my mortgage it was a 4.30 appointment and i wasn`t asked to put the day afters date on the form,so why is the bank allowed to put a wrong date on the bill

    I totally agree with this. I don't want to fan the flames, but I think it is a form of false accountancy.

    I remember some years ago when I paid after normal banking hours, a branch (HSBC I think) stamping the statement with the correct date and annotating it with the time. This would seem to the correct way of doing it. Nobody does anything properly these days.

    My guess is you're stuffed though - and as already noted, bare in mind for next time that with Faster Payments you get a bit longer.
  • The bank are simply stamping the statement with the date the payment will be processed. This has been going on for probably 20 years or more. At least since banks extended their opening hours from 3.30 pm.

    but then you'll just get more confused, as the bill will be stamped 27th, but your account transaction report will say 28th.

    Some branches WILL stamp the bill as 27th, but it really makes no difference as the transaction date will still be the same and you'll still get a late payment charge.

    I've not read the T&Cs for your CC, but mine clearly says "Payments must be received before 4pm on the due date, or before 4pm on the previous working day if the due date is a non-working day.". I've seen people get stung by this condition before as their due date was a Saturday and they paid on a Saturday and got a late payment charge.
