in Credit cards
hi i`m hoping someone can help me.
credit card payment date is today 27th sept 2012 ,my mrs went into Barclay`s bank in Wakefield to pay the credit card bill and the cashier changed the date on the stamp to the 28th sept(tomorrows date) and stated as it`s 4.02 pm that is what they do.Now a late payment charge of £12 will be added to the credit card for late payment. Are the banks allowed to stamp a bill with the wrong date.I have contacted the branch and they say 4pm is there cut off time for the day`s banking and stamping a bill with tomorrow`s date is legal .Could someone shed some light on this as i think putting a wrong paid date on a bill is not right.
thanks in advance
Mick
if this is posted in the wrong section could a mod please move it to where it should be thx

Nothing wrong with that !
You have plenty of options and notification to pay your bill on time. Leaving it so late is simply down to you and the wife.
Not what you probably want to hear, but that's the way it is.
If you do get a late payment charge ask for it to be refunded. First time offenders usually do get refunds.0 -
I don't know about legal but it's perfectly normal for a bank to have a cut off time (often 4 pm, although it used to be even earlier) and to regard anything done after that time as part of the next day's processing. I don't think you'll get anywhere with the branch, I'd suggest you contact your credit card provider and see if they will waive the charge in the circumstances.0

on the bill it says to pay by the 27th it was paid on the 27th ,surely stamping in incorrect date is wrong 28th is tomorrow not today0
-
And you'll know that means by close of business day if paying over the counter. The cut off is 4pm, there has to be one, you missed it, accept it and move on !
If you don't want to risk a late payment then make a faster payment now online from your bank account.0 -
It is pretty standard for a 4pm cut-off. They don't guarantee to process anything received after 4pm until the following day.
Pay the minimum payment by direct debit in future.
That way you will NEVER pay a late payment fee.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
i can accept the 4pm end of banking day but stamping an incorrect date on the bill is wrong0

So if 4pm on the 27th is the end of the day (banking) then surely 4:01 is the 28th?
Unless we have 27.5th of September now..
The date is so the bank can keep a track of when the payment will be processed.0 -
so you are saying the banking day starts at 4.01pm
knob head
Bit rude but technically, yes. Although if you want the ACTUAL reason it's because banks will only process payments up until a certain time, in your case, 4pm. Therefore, any payments made after 4pm will not be processed till the next day.
I'm with lloyds and their banking day ends at 3.30pm. If I go over my limit they text me and tell me I have until 3.30pm to put my account in order, if I turn up at the bank at 3.32 with the money, I will still be charged.0 -
I always pay mine online, as soon as I get the bill I check it and set up payment, never had a late charge yet. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

Given the OP's response of "knob head", it would appear to be another poster who doesn't like what they hear.
Pity that so many posters in this thread have obviously wasted their own free time in trying to explain it to such an individual.
In short OP, yes it is legal and you had every opportunity for paying the bill before the cutoff time.0
