  • Yep! do it now and put the other contract into the BR. The OR will not worry about you saving money.

    Thanks Tigger:p

I thought the OR may see this as a good way to save money. I'm off to do it now.

    Once again. Thank you.

PS: I guess I should just list this new £10/month Tesco sim only deal as a monthly outgoing on my SOA? Is this the right thing to do?

has anyone managed to open a cashminder account over the phone recently? I don't have a local Co-Op branch in my town I could go into. Also, what do you say the reason you specifically want the cashminder account if they try and talk you into a current or different account? (obviously you don't want to tell them you plan on going BR)

get on the phone, tell the adviser exactly what you want.

No need whatsoever to mention potential bankruptcy...as it may never happen [which is why one cannot pre-pay, pre-book these things.....one can plan for them..but only in personal terms.

Why would they try and talk you into something else?

Just insist you want a basic bank account, no need for a cheque book or frills.

The adviser will be well aware of the 'undischarged BR' restrictions applied by Co-op.....so as long as the credit check goes ok, then they will not be concerned...they might guess what may be forthcoming.....but BR doesn't affect your account anyway.

Was thinking they would get bonuses or whatever for getting customers to open certain types of accounts.

Will give this a go! Thanks.

Not always OK to open a Cashminder before BR it seems.
Just had a letter from Coop bank. Because of my Br, they're now closing my account in 30 days! I mean !!!!!!? I was assured by the staff in my local branch that everything would be OK. Well thanks Coop. Thanks a lot.
I went into my local Co-op bank and give them nuts for telling me it's ok to open a basic account if I'm thinking about BR. They deny all knowledge of ever advising me of that - how convenient!

I think there's more to this than meets the eye?

Co-op usually only 'close' an account if they think it has, or is, being mis-managed.

I would suggest making personal contact over the phone if this occurs...especially if it is felt that a mistake has been made?

[I have had experience of this attitude from Co-op in the past.....they threatened to close one of my accounts [because a DD had been moved, but due to the systems of the company concerned, they still demanded from the original account....Co-op don't like failed DD's at all. They threatened me with 30 days notice to close [by letter...a standard computer print-out it appeared]....so I got on the dog'nbone and played holy hell!

Told them to close all my accounts that instant! {tha's me all over]....they took a step backward at that point, looked into the DD debacle, and I got a apology!]

Remember, Co-op operate a '3-strikes and your're out' rule...so if this comes into play, it might be confused with the existence of a BR too?

When I went to open a co-op cashminder at a Britannia branch it was mainly to remove my funds from Barclaycard as my bank was Barclays.
Easy opened in 10 mins, as the manager knew me so no ID needed.

The problems were in the first few weeks as I posted on the banking forum. The internet updating was so slow, that I was having the card refused all over. The sudden, overnight in fact, of having a lot of money to having practically none took some getting used to.
My saving grace was registering for up to date balance by text, which has to be done by the call centre.

Once I began to understand how slow the Co-op is via the internet, and just sent "balance" in a text, we started to get along. :)
For anyone who has a new Co-op account, register for the text service. Also available at ATMs, never trust the online balance as you did with other banks.
