Halifax clarity, the first to decline me! I dont' get it!!!

As someone who has just the one credit card and in full time long employment and living in long residency I can't believe that i've just been declined a credit card from Halifax. I was hoping to use it for a holiday!

Trying right now to get an experian report but I wonder if its cause they don't make money out of me!

How often do you use your existing credit card? How do you pay your balance? Whats your average balance? All these have an effect.

Also, Halifax prefer their own customers, but it can also have a negative effect if you just opened a Halifax/LTSB/etc group account in the last 6 months.

I became a halifax customer about 3mths back I think so thought i'd be likely to be given approval and didn't think i'd be declined. The current credit card I'm with i've only just start using to get cashback though i've had for good few months and I always pay off the balance in full each month.

I've just tried the aqua card and also got declined! Maybe cause too soon but i'm trying to find a way I can avoid hefty charges for a potential holiday i'm doing later in Nov. So much for both my options.
  • Do you have a joint account with anyone? If so, do they have a good credit rating? Phone bills and TV subscriptions are classed as debts too. Are you paying any for your (assumed) children and therefore holding several of them? Opened any new current accounts?

I was declined an Argos card a few months ago, which startled me as I thought I'd have a good credit rating as I've never missed any payment, have a decent income and have never really been in debt by more than £500 (student overdraft). Turns out it was because I am paying Virgin Media TV, two £36 phone bills and had opened two new accounts (I moved house and switched bank).
  • I can believe it, and you will too!

Salary, previous debt, current debt in relation to salary, electoral roll information, moving house, all of these that you have neglected to mention, all have an impact.

It's got sod all to do with that they wont make any money off you - of course they'll make money out of you.

Nope, I have a good salary, no previous debt, current debt of only £200 on credit card, my electoral roll info is all uptodate, I've lived here for a decade! I have no joint accounts and all my bills are done via direct debit.

    So now what??
  • Maybe you just dont meet Halifaxs lending criteria - although I would obtain your credit report from Experian or Equifax - £2 standard report - in case someones done something on your behalf that you dont know about.
  • 1st Halifax then Aqua I would say theirs defiantly something lurking on your Jeremy Kyle.

You need to get reports from Experian and Equifax and sign up to Noddle for free to get a full picture of your situation: There could be something that's on one but not the other. For example, I bought something for cash from Shopping Direct and they made a credit search which is on my credit report for a year!

The reason could be anything or everything: Maxed available credit, not long enough credit history, defaults or missed payments or over limit at a linked address, defaults or missed payments or over limit with a linked person, not enough time on the electoral roll, too many credit searches over a short period indicating potential fraud - you name it!

You need to get your credit reports to assess your situation and you could also try asking for the reason you've been turned down and the CRA they used.

How can I not meet their criteria when I am already one of their reward current account customers! Ridiculous really. I've just filled in an experian application form to send to them for £2 priviledge. This is very frustrating as now my plan for a cheap spending holiday could potentially backfire!!!
