How much to live on per week

I know I could feed myself on £15 per week (less probably) because I'm almost permanently on a diet - but I have 3 healthy weight sporty males to feed and trust me they eat a lot!!!!
Sorry, but I just feel the need to point out that most 18 year old girls are /not/ anorexic, and that this completely trivialises a very scary and dangerous disease.
As I was the person who first made the £15 comment, I'd like to say that I am not a particularly good cook, but I know what can be made simply and cheaply. I am also a not-skinny at all 20-yo girl who does a fair amount of sports, so there goes that theory.
It only takes a little while of work researching meals, and sometimes you've just gotta eat weird food combinations (reduced aisle!) - but we all know that anything will go in a stir-fry.0 -
I know what my daughter has been spending because I asked due to this thread as that was what it's about and I thought it might be helpful. Here dead we lie because we did not choose

I don't waste food, just don't memorise the price of everything and when I talked to my DD at uni we usually had too much to talk about to focus on food, I do admit at exam time I would anxiously ask if she was eating OK but wouldn't go through the shopping list with her. I guess we all have things that interest us.
I don't memorise everything, as I've said she's chuffed to bits that she can cook cheaply and likes to tell me how much she's spent (or not lol ) on stuff. She's only at uni 25 miles away from home so we have pretty much the same kind of main shops, but she has the added advantage of having a really good cheap old fashioned market that sells fresh meat and veg as well as discount stores for for all the other stuff.
My daughter and I have free texts (both on o2) so she'll text me for anything and we have long rambling text conversations about all kinds and because she's close to home she comes back to do her washing every 3-4 weeks so we talk about all kinds of stuff.0 -

I'm with you! Being a (mature) student myself I find my brain capacity is more taken with academic stuff than memorising the price of everything in the supermarket
I know how to shop frugally, and I mostly do, but I refuse to compromise my health by eating crap. There's absolutely no way on earth I could live on £15 a week no matter how hard I tried and I'm a competent cook who knows how to make highly nutritious meals for very little money“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
Well I've just had the second cookery phone call of the night - god we must be so boring too!
It was however tempered by a hilarious conversation about her night out last night and the latest incarnation of Banksy who is after her and sounds totally eccentric! Here dead we lie because we did not choose

I've never insisted that everyone could do it, just that it it is possible.0

Anyway Looby don't go giving anyone meal ideas or ideas on how they might cut expenditure - that would never do!
As long as your daughter is happy and healthy and you don't just talk prices don't worry about it!;)Here dead we lie because we did not choose

Hey, that works both ways!! I tried to help the people over on Old Style to work out a healthy, nutritious menu for very little money but got shouted down because my menu was "a few pence" over their £7 a week limit but it was a damned sight more healthy!! I gave up, not worth my time or knowledge“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

Well they are silly then - I certainly wouldn't want my daughter to be eating rubbish for the sake of a few pence and I know Looby wouldn't want her daughter to do so either but actually I think people have been rather rude on here.
It makes absolutely no difference to me how much anyone spends but if someone is asking who is concerned they are not doing the right thing by their child then I can just tell them, well this is what my daughter is spending blah blah blah, hope that gives you some idea, so you really don't need to worry about it.
Sadly the brigade who don't seem to have any concerns about money don't seem to find that acceptable! Here dead we lie because we did not choose

The trouble is, a culture seems to have developed on this forum that you need to compete against the best/cheapest/whatever and people lose sight of their real values and also feel demeaned because someone else appears to be to be doing everything far better for far cheaper.
It's all a load of !!!!!!!!, quite frankly. You're competing against words on a screen, and anyone can type whatever they like. Then you get the little gangs that all come along and "thank each other" so you feel even worse.
It's all psychological to make the internet bullies feel even better about themselves
Ignore them“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0
