Had one old dear chase me up the street fighting with her brolly to tell me her mail was wet one day. Err yes, the mail doesn't have a brolly missus ;)
Ok I'm gonna stir it then...

The customer has paid RM to deliver the item in good condition and not damaged. Soaking wet is not in good condition and some contents might well have been damaged.

Yes it's tough work that you are out traipsing the streets in the rain but you should still be protecting what is effectively the customer's property. Don't you have waterproof satchels or anything?
I need to think of something new here...

Yes but your hands get wet opening them and water falls in when you do. Then you handle them with wet hands and water running of the sleeves of your high viz. Before that they are often lying in trucks and vans in porous sacks in the wet too.

Glad I am not a postie any more.

The red bags are not waterproof
they come with a plastic liner, but it doesnt stop water ingress
The storm jackets are not water proof
eventually when everything is wet,how do you keep mail dry?

Each persons mail could be individually placed in a plastic bag. That would mean although the bag gets wet the mail never does.

I imagine there is a machine that can do it. I can't imagine that DVD's/CD's etc. are individually wrapped by hand so I assume that the technology exists that can sort (and wrap) mail.

Not that I'm advocating this as the way forward. Its just one possible way to ensure the mail stays dry.

well you have an issue there
you are talking about mail which is ready for delivery

not a great pic,but image a frame like this with tighter spacing
so the mail is sorted into this frme, along with D2Ds,small packets etc
you would then need to remove this and bag it
DOs dont have room for the sort of machinary you refer to.
The existing walk sequencing machines(letters arrive in frame/duty order) can only do standard letters.
    not A4,plastic wrapped(non mech) etc
You would also fall into a bit of an issue with whats in and out of the pouch.
for example,D2Ds are meant to be delivered loose,so as not to give perference to the one on the outside
I theory you could have mail sequenced and bagged at the mail centres(at least the mail they an already sequence) but TBH the MCs can barely get the existing sequencing to the DOs
you also have the knock on effect of less mail pertray. so less mail per truck
