Why are you taking it to the post office to complain about damage caused by RoyalMail?

I'm tired of trying to explain the difference to people
I'm sure at one point it will sink in

hiya K_P83. As a former postie, I agree with custardly, it looks like band damage. If it was like that with the machines then the postie would probably notice it and stick it in a bag. As custardly said, loose items in the envelope weaken it, I handed a letter to a little old lady one day where the envelope had completely disintegrated. Was at the bottom of my bundle of mail and it was raining hard, ofc the bottom large letter got soaked from my coat. It was embarrassing to explain it as people always think the worse.

Yes you could always complain to RM, but really looks like band damage :)

I think that's been done accidentally with an elastic band.

Edit: Oops, that's already been said :D

custardy & mazza - thanks for an alternative view. Fair point. I'm willing to entertain the idea that it could be accidental. Yes there were loose items in there such as booklets.

As for why i would take it to a PO, well as i'm not 'in the know', i assume they're part of the mail system & that having them view the evidence would mean something if/when filing a claim as opposed to your mate down the street.

Thank you for seeing the alternative. It could also be to do with where your house is in the bundle, if it's quite near the end, the band will be rubbing on it for a long time too :) Unfortunately, they haven't yet found a way to keep the mail together on rounds that does away with the bands

They are nothing to do with mail delivery, complaints(outwith specific Post Office services) nor compensation.
very soon the Post Offices will be fully separated from RM,and RM carved up.
eventually folks will get it ;)

Some people think it's still called the GPO y'know :D

    Dear OP,

Surely the fact that you've photographed it is evidence of how it arrived should you wish to take up the issue with RM?

I must have got the bottom of the bag (like mazza111 described) the other day - m'wife had laid the post on the radiator to dry until I got home. Thankfully the contents (commemorative stamps) survived unscathed.
I need to think of something new here...

Had one old dear chase me up the street fighting with her brolly to tell me her mail was wet one day. Err yes, the mail doesn't have a brolly missus ;)

  • It might be because the letter has got wet, I received some mail this week which was wet and the envelope had split open like yours on the photo (and I work for Royal Mail :))
