The state of my mail/post which arrived this morning. Anyone tackled this?

I've done a bit of bank account applying recently & have been expecting various items through the post.
I've received one of those big envelopes (the ones like Santander send out when you open an account).
** I've not yet opened it as i don't want to alter it in any way in case i need to take this to a post office for them to witness.
Anyway, on the front it's stamped up as private & "delivered by royal mail".
I've heard that their 'machines' can shred sections of envelopes, but i'm left wondering...
Would such a machine shred half way across the bottom, but not from/to the edges?? Take a look:

Not happy with this at all.
Obviously i'd rather not just ignore it. What option to take?

That looks like standard pilfering to me.
Most of our mail arrives in this condition. The Royal Mail could not care less. Neither can the police.
After a bank took 4 attempts to send us a credit card, they gave up and made us fetch it in the branch. Now most items with any value we either pick up or I get sent to my work.0 -
I had a letter yesterday delivered in a sealed bag saying it had been damaged and to let RM know if anything missing - the fact that yours isn't being repackaged in such bags seems to suggest it is happening after it has left the sorting areaYou never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0

I don't know what option you can take. The odds are its been done accidentally. If nothing is missing and this is an isolated occurence I wouldn't worry about it.
If this has happened a few times then contact Royal Mail.
If they were going to steal from your mail they would take the whole envelope and you would be none the wiser. It would be a pretty stupid thief who delivers the letter after he has nicked items from it.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I've had a few of these over the years, though i've never had a string of them in a short period of time.
The odd once or twice i've had them where they've been put in a re-sealed bag where some effort has been put in to securing the post. The vast majority of the time it's been like this though.
I don't know if anything has been stolen as i say - i've not opened it yet as i didn't want to alter it any in case i needed to take it to a post office for a worker to view the envelope & act as a sort of witness to any potential claim i could make.0 -

Whilst that may well be true if the reason for a theft was to steal a physical object but maybe not if the "theft" was of personal details for use at a later date.
A letter such as the one described by the OP could contain some form of banking details which if reported as lost or stolen would probably be rendered useless, but if copied and kept, might aid ID theft or similar at a later date.0 -

Just open it. Your no better off leaving it like that, it's quite clear it's 'open' from the huge hole in the envelope. What is taking it like that and opening it at the post office going to achieve?
It would make more sense to open it and see if there is actually anything missing before walking to the post office to complain something might be missing.0 -

If that was their plan then they would have opened the letter more subtly and not just ripped it open to leave evidence of their tampering. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

It's extremely hard to open and reseal an envelope without leaving any evidence of this being done if the envelope in question is one of the secure ones sometimes used by banks and other financial institutions. (They can't always be steamed open due to the adhesive used), or there may not have been time or a hidden place to do this.
As it currently stands, the OP isn't sure if anything dodgy has gone on, and if they were a bit less savvy, they might just think the damage was accidental (which it might well be) and not think of contacting their bank.0 -
with a machine its more likely to be a clean 'slice'
That looks more to me like the band caught the envelope as they split a new bundle.
TBH its hard to tell from the angle
Is this an A4 with dust a basic letter inside,or with loose items such as booklets and the like?
these can slide back and forth in transit, then they eventually split the envelope where the item has been striking0 -
Why are you taking it to the post office to complain about damage caused by RoyalMail?0
