No streetlights after midnight????!

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, around our estate every streetlight goes off now at midnight and doesnt come back on, is this legal/allowed?
Surely it's a health hazard? I start work at 5am and it is pitch black for the first 500 metres I walk, and I mean total darkness (I use my phone as a pathetic light, walking along crouched over like a 95 year old man)
Surely this isn't allowed? Isn't it opening the gates for claims of injurys/falls? (not me, I mean the councils are responsible for cracks/lifted paving slabs, surely same for no lighting at night?)

its all part of saving money they switched most of the street lights off around my area with only the odd one left on
all you can do is ring the council to see if its a fault or wether its part of there streetlight energy saving plans and in the mean time get a proper torch

    Buy a big torch.....

Of course it won't result in claims. You are responsible for own safety.

Can't see why it would be illegal. There's a fair few motorways where they turn the street lights off in the early hours.

Have you considerred purchasing a torch?
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

I don't think there is any legal requirement - after all many roads especially the smaller and more rural ones don't have street lights at all.

Unless it's heavily overcast there is usually enough light to see by. Otherwise get a torch, you can get a surprisingly bright LED one that easily fits in a pocket for a few pounds.

our street lights go off at midnight , most nights there's enough ambient light to see where you are going but some nights you can't see you hand in front of your face , this seems a strange time to go off when people are still coming back from a night out, but then the lights go on again at 5-00am when there's hardly anyone apart from the o/p about

Many rural villages don't have any street lamps at all. Our village has a few at strategic positions but we had to pay for their installation and running costs ourselves. We have recently had to decommission a couple permanently to save money.
