Basic psychology (projection).

In the same way people that feel shame about homosexual leanings will be publicly homophobic, people that are ashamed of claiming benefits will project that shame onto others; which is how we've got to the situation on this board of people with disabilities claiming benefits insulting other people with disabilities claiming benefits.
Rubbish! I've heard it all now.0 -

The post was tongue-in-cheek and it's just a hypothesis, but can you explain why someone would spend endless hours accusing strangers of fraud any better? I'm training as a psychologist & could produce endless studies which support the underlying principle of my argument.

I have not the slightest interest in explaining it. Life has dealt disabled people a bad enough hand without all the vilification they seem to get nowadays for daring to claim the benefits to which they are entitled.0 -
personally i think it could be bitterness at their situation which leads to jealousy & spite when someone else manages to deal better in a similar situation. if there is an element of shame, imo its not about claiming benefits but how they see themselves dealing with their situation compared to others.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

You've got it back to front hun, this is about people vilifying themselves then projecting that onto others; not about 'the vilification they seem to get'. It's a basic tenet of modern psychology, (so much so that that children in Scotland learn about at Higher level).personally i think it could be bitterness at their situation which leads to jealousy & spite when someone else manages to deal better in a similar situation. if there is an element of shame, imo its not about their disability (why would anyone be ashamed of being disabled? o.O) but how they see themselves dealing with it compared to others.
This would make sense and would also explain why some people that are fully dependent on benefits will have a go at those of us that work while claiming.
In terms of shame I was referring to the claiming of benefits, not of the actual disability (although I wouldn't be surprised if some people suffered feelings of shame due to their disability), from posts on here it's very clear that some people are ashamed of claiming benefits.

People don't need to subconsciously project. Bashing benefit claimants and claiming benefits aren't mutually exclusive..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0 -
yeah, i edited before you posted and also added a link to a well known psychological phenomenon. You've got it back to front hun, this is about people vilifying themselves then projecting that onto others; not about 'the vilification they seem to get'. Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0
