Tip: A single person may not think about it, but I find that checking primary schools stats tells you a lot about its catchment area.
Then, there's also www.police.uk to get monthly crime maps, which is also useful though it tends to make you more nervous ;)

Is £180k considered "affordable" for a single FTB these days?

Many of those 200 properties I mentioned in my previous post are less than £180K, but even £180K may be affordable to a FTB if they earn enough.

Or you could move out of Reading to somewhere easily commutable back to the centre if you need to work there. Prices are much lower in, say, Didcot and you have a direct train link.
  • some good suggestions here, those new flats @ priory point look rather nice and it's a good location, walking distance to town and right on the a4 which leads to the m4.

had a look at the railway map and didcot is another good idea, i did think of smaller towns out of Reading, such as Wallingford/Abingdon/Didcot, but Didcot has the advantage of the railway line.

And Didcot has the railway museum :)

Theale is nice and just across the M4 has bus links into Reading

OP - we still don't know what your budget is for buying a property.

I'm quite surprised at this thread as in the last few years I've got the impression that huge numbers of flats have been built in Reading. Is there really a shortage? Or is the problem the prices being asked?

Indeed, as mentioned there are quite a few!

Sorry correction - Usk Road/Dee Road area of Tilehurst is not a very nice area (although might be biased because exmil lives there). Old Tilehurst is certainly different. I still preferred Calcot though. Maybe that is because it is extremely convenient for going anywhere in the UK. Theale is definately a good option, although more expensive than Reading perse I think (been a while).
