properties in Reading for single person

Other things to be aware (or beware) of in Reading:
1) Whitley (anywhere W of Shinfield Rd). Usually described in estate-agent speak as 'South Reading'. Not good. (Also West Reading.)
2) Flooding (and therefore insurance problems even in a 3rd floor flat) near the river.0 -
I used to live in Calcot and that was ok (In the estate near Sainbury's). Whitley I have lived in as well, sh*t hole. I would keep away from Tilehurst as well.Grab life by the balls before it grabs you by the neck.0

There aren't enough nice 1-bed places for singles.... that's why I will end up buying a 3-4 bedroom house, just because there's more choice and the areas are better and you can get a garden/garage too.
C'est la vie.... bl00dy annoying though it is.0 -

There are loads of 3/4 bed houses here but doesn't seem to be much for the non-family, non-kids single person.
If anyone lives in or knows the area maybe they could enlighten me of such properties or maybe I need to look elsewhere??
What is your budget?
Just did a quick search on rightmove for studio/ 1-bed flats for sale in Reading, and there were almost 200 under £180,000."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -
I was so shocked when I went to Reading. Being used to Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and Doncaster I assumed Reading was somewhat more upmarket. In Sainsburys they security tag ALL the alcohol- even in the less salubrious areas here that is rare. Next shop the police were arresting someone (who was resisting). I used to go monthly until a few weeks ago and I never quite got over the surprise. Always took a deep breath before walking from station to hotel at night as there was always something (or someone) best avoided.
Nice areas a short drive away though!June challenge £100 a day £3161.63 plus £350 vouchers plus £108.37 food/shopping saving
July challenge £50 a day. £ 1682.50/1550
October challenge £100 a day. £385/£31000 -

Is £180k considered "affordable" for a single FTB these days? :eek:They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0 -

It's pretty diverse indeed.
There are both s**tholes and upmarket areas, say, across the Thames.0 -
Just a random idea, but if you were considering moving north Stevenage is only 30 mins from London, and there are one bedroom flats available for around £90,000.
I dont really know a great about it though, as I'm a bit further out.0 -

Tilehurst? Are you sure? The old village area is lovely. I lived in two different houses in Tilehurst and one in Calcot and Tilehurst was much the better area as Calcot is just one massive new housing estate.Rational judgement, now, at this very moment.
Virtuous action, now, at this very moment.

Willing acceptance - now, at this very moment - of what you can’t change0
