Have to fit 4 new tyres?
Comments
-
If all the tyres are currently legal why not just save the money you would have spent on two new tyres this month and then buy all four next month?
Exactly what i was thinking, and if they order from here they will have 4 tyres for just over the price they would have paid for 3

By the way,who were the tyre retailers Kwap fit?0 -
Thanks, gord115 - that is a good price.
I had thought before about buying tyres online for delivery at home but always been worried about being 'stung' for the fitting / balancing / disposal costs to get them fitted. Also don't fancy staying at home to receive them (it's not the sort of delivery that a neighbour can take in for you!), and lugging them round to the tyre place.
I have booked 4 Pirelli Scorpion tyres from Tyre Savings website with fitting by Halfords Autocentre at £173 per corner all inclusive. I was very happy with that price :jOld dog but always delighted to learn new tricks!0 -
I wouldn't argue with that.
I've seen lease cars that get oil changes every two years on an eco service.
Mine get them every six months on a mileage.
And I've done things to lease cars I would never do to mine.0 -
I drive a landrover and have just had two rear tyres changed and i was not told to change the fronts as they had 7mm left on them.. Westy get wranglers..£180 each but the wear is great..It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.0 -
its urban myth
wheels always rotate at different speeds when cornering thats what the diffs deal with. a difference of a few mm wont be any major problem if it was the case of a diff failing they would fail constantly when going round sharp corners
its just a chance for tyre centres to turn a 2 tyre sale into a 4 tyre sale
Some cars have viscous couplings. These rely on torque shear in the fluid to generate the diff lock, and are designed for occasional use. If you run one set of wheels at a different speed over a long period of time, you overheat and denature the fluid and you're left with a non functioning non locking differential.
Other cars have clutch packs which they use to distribute torque - haldex systems often have them, some Subarus do, as do many other 4WD/AWD systems. The clutches are not designed to be replaceable because under normal use they will last the life of the car. But if you put undue stress on them they will wear and fail prematurely, again leaving you with a 2WD car or one with odd handling traits or warning lights, and a potentially expensive repair bill.if it does have an intelligent transfer box it will just send more power to rear to get the rear wheels turning same speed as the front
Remember, on loose surfaces wheels are able to slip and slide, and advanced 4WD systems like a modern discovery has are designed to use this to keep the vehicle moving off road. You can lock the diffs off road because the tyres themselves slip.
On road, you have a near 3 tonne vehicle pressing large tyres into the road surface. There is no opportunity for them to slip if they are being driven at the wrong speed. Cruise for a while at 70(cough) mph and with mis-matched tyres you can be placing severe stresses on transmission components. Expensive transmission components.
I think the OP was right to heed advice to change all four tyres together. I always would in an AWD/4WD vehicle unless I really had no option.
The handbook should guide you as to what the right thing to do it. Some 4WD vehicles won't care, but the majority will and if you can't afford to repair an expensive failure then you should prevent it.0
