I guess it's a bit moot if they all need replacing anyway.
But it does seem strange to me that an ATV which can handle being on uneven ground with wheels prone to slipping and running at different angles and rotation can't handle a difference of a couple of millimetres of tyre wear.0 -

I agree that it does seem strange, but perhaps it is because it is not so much of an issue when doing 10-20mph off-road but a major problem when doing 80mph on the motorway?Old dog but always delighted to learn new tricks!0 -
If all the tyres are currently legal why not just save the money you would have spent on two new tyres this month and then buy all four next month?0

It's not grip.
It knows wheel rotation.
If all the wheels are in tolerence, the front wheels will travel the same distance as the back.
If they're not in spec, the distance will be too different.
They're good, but they're not magic.
How do you propose it measures the actual diameter of the wheel?
So what you're saying is (I think) that by putting new tyres on the front with, let's say, 8mm tread & keeping the old tyres with, say 2mm tread, on the rear for a month the OP is in danger of causing serious damage?
Basically a high tech 4x4 can't cope with a difference of 6mm or less than a quarter of an inch?

No idea,
but a difference in diameter of 12mm, (a new tyre to old) is a difference of 32mm every revoultion, or the back would try to to 14m behind for every km the front did.
Some blurb on it.
"The transfer box receives a torque input from the transmission output shaft, which is passed through the unit to two outputs for the front and rear drive shafts.
The input torque is equally distributed via a bevel gear type differential. In order to provide an optimal torque distribution to each wheel in all driving conditions, the unit is equipped with an electronically controlled locking and torque-biasing device. This device detects wheel slip via various vehicle system inputs to the transfer box control module and locks the differential accordingly. The locking torque is applied through a multi-plate clutch assembly."
It would be unhappy if it was locked for any distance.0 -
For the last 25 yrs I have driven different Land Rover defenders in work over 750,000 miles yes 750,000 miles maybe even more
The tyres have been changed as an axle as in 2 front or 2 rear as and when needed
never had a transfer gearbox go awol due to 4 tyres not being changed at the same time
Had 1 let go after 102,000 miles due to wear and tear0 -
its urban myth
wheels always rotate at different speeds when cornering thats what the diffs deal with. a difference of a few mm wont be any major problem if it was the case of a diff failing they would fail constantly when going round sharp corners
its just a chance for tyre centres to turn a 2 tyre sale into a 4 tyre sale0 -
