Have to fit 4 new tyres?

I don't come near you though.
I bow to your complete ignorance here as well, as you clearly don't have any idea what you're on about.
Me & you both then, so why be an a5se with someone who has (seemingly) far more experience than both of us?
I don't believe that you have to change all 4 tyres to avoid major damage, as I've alluded too.
If someone can show me it does I'll take it onboard & be happy I've learned something... how about you?Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -

Well, I know the transfer box on a discovery 3 is an intelligent unit, with servo motors and a clutch, controlled by an ecu, and I know the defender isn't much more than it was decades ago.
So if a tyre fitter takes the time to check all 4 tyres, and decides to let a customer leave rather than sell 2 tyres, and it fits in with other stories about transfer boxes, I'll listen.
As to the defender, if it's not an issue, and causes no problems, why is it the first thing anyone fitted when I had experience of them was freewheeling front hubs?0 -

The point is you don't know, neither do I
I'd like to see some evidence (possibly from Land Rover) because I don't see how it can possibly do any damage but I'm willing to be proved wrong!

if it does have an intelligent transfer box it will just send more power to rear to get the rear wheels turning same speed as the front0

You want to believe a tyre fitter.
There's a lot of technolgy in a discovery 3.
It's an off roader you point, and it'll do the rest with the best of them. No skill required as the computer drives it.
I've looked at them, and I know enough to know it's a possibility I'd avoid.
The fitters could be trying it on.
But it could be very expensive if it's true, as opposed to a few quid changing the tyres slightly early.
So I'd go for changing the lot if there's any doubt.0 -
westy22 have you checked the manual?I also noted on page 251 of the manual it state tyres should be replaced as sets of 4 and if that is not possible then replace as axle sets. (though it is not clear why)Are you for real? - Glass Half Empty??
:coffee:0 -
The manual also says
"Do not use auxiliary equipment, such asroller generators, that are driven by onlycause failure of the transfer gearbox."
one or two wheels of the vehicle, as they will
So not a normal transfer box.0 -
I don't mean this in a derogatory manner, but surely those economics were factored into the decision to buy a three year old Discovery?
He didn't say he had just bought a 3 year old car, just needs new tyres on his 3 year old car.
I would try another tyre fitter. I suspect that as long as you fit a pair of tyres on the same axle it should be OK to fit just two tyre now and say another pair next month as you planned.
I always find it pays to shop around for tyres anyway. A well know tyre fitting firm (whose name boasts how fast they are) are allowed to "compete" with locally quoted prices. So I ring the others, pick out the best prices for 1 or 2 brands of tyres I fancy and then ring them, They will start by quoting me a "silly" very high price. I then tell them I have had a much better quote for whichever model he has in stock, and I tell him I have been offered those at £X. ( I tell them a price £5 lower than I have actually been quoted. The worst they will do is match that price. Depending on the margin they have in that tyre they often offer to beat the price by a further £5 per tyre.0 -

you need to have all four wheels on rollers as the transfer box doesnt like only two wheels being driven its the same if the vehicle is towed with the front wheels in the air0 -
oops double post0
