Son damaged neighbours car. Advice please

  • I would insist on the owner of the damaged car to provide 3 quotes from different garages for the repairs. Some garages can be the biggest crooks going when it comes to repairs like this. - Going through a not too disimilar thing myself at the moment except my car was damaged. 1st question asked by all the garages I approached was "Is your insurance paying?" i.e "do I have the nod to print money!!". Drives me mad. Insist that the garages understand payment is from yourself.

Respect to you and your neighbour for taking the responsibility - many wouldn't. If your child owned up and is being punnished accordingly then thats great and can be put down to lifes experiences.

isn't that causing the poor owner of the car MORE hassle? considering the owner of the car is completely blameless in this I would think that this is causing him or her more work/hassle/stress & if it was me I'd be annoyed if I was asked to spend my time & money getting quotes after all of this!
nothing to see here, move along...

Because that's the point of insurance.

If I were the neighbour, I would pocket the £700 and claim on the insurance, with my protected 'No claims bonus'.

One of the primary principles of insurance is that you dont profit from it. What you are suggesting is fraud, and just sucks tbh.

Well done for OP for owning up and acting on it, our car got a big dent on the front recently, we suspect from a neighbours van reversing into - there is a bit that sticks out at just the right height.

No one owned up of course so we have to deal with it. But hey life is like that, worse things happen at sea, take it on the chin, blah blah.

firstly I think Chuckles is a big old TROLL.
Secondly the OP is taking resonsibility for the actions of her child she has never said she wont pay for the damage, she is just making use of any insurance available to her - because thats what we Money Savers do and funnily enough thats why we pay insurance premiums. If those poor strugling decrepit old insurance companies didnt want to pay for this type of claim then they wouldnt have it in their policy now would they?
Quite how this is contributing to the demise of "this country" I really dont know. I would understand if the OP said it wasnt her fault and she wasnt paying but that quite clearly isnt the case.

So Chuckles you big troll go back to the cave you lumbered out of and stay there until the sky darkens and the thunder rolls and all us sinners have been taught a lesson - maybe then people such as yourself who are undoubtably perfect in every way can live happily ever after.

Why are people on here trying to criminalise what was obviously an accident!! Accidents happen. How many people have played ball to have it go through a neighbors window? I think the OP is certainly not shunning her responsibility at all. She has said that she has never had a problem with him before. No one knows what happened!

Good grief! I can picture the lot of you (those calling this a criminal act), fists in the air, gun in the other, hunting down the little fellow, screaming for blood! :(

She asked for advice, not flack. If you don't have anything helpful or even nice to say, then keep your fingers off the keyboard. ;)

Pay up. The neighbour is already being v nice about this, and if they were then faced with 'can I claim off your insurance' I would lose all patience. They are going to be inconvenienced waiting for their car to be fixed.

    1) Claiming off the neighbours insurance would be wrong (but the OP has said that isn't an option).

    2) Claiming off the household insurance of OP or other kids parents *is* basically wrong, but not really the OPs fault - more the fault of the insurance company for allowing something so stupid to be covered. People will pay higher premiums to cover this...people who just want to cover their house against accidents etc, not people who want their children to be able to throw rocks at any vehicles they like within range.

For Gods sake he is SEVEN!!!!!!!!!

They probably had no idea of cause and effect. They were playing a game. If they were 10, 12 or 14 I would agree with your claims of negligence but they weren't they were 7. Plus you have no idea what level of maturity these 7 year olds have as it can vary quite a bit at that age.

It was an accident - even your generation had them!

I recall playing all manner of games when I was a child ..... mind none of them included playing with bricks !!!:confused:

I have to wonder just exactly how much you are getting out of causing an argument on this thread  I also wonder how many people you have pushed away from you with your attitude. maybe you need to get out more :rotfl:

So anyone who has a different point of view to yours or to most (not all) in a discussion constitutes them causing an argument to you does it ?

To me it is exactly what a forum is (by it's most literal definition) - it is a Forum where people can have their say whatever their point of view, and we do tend to have different views on all manner of subjects.

I watched a 'Judge Judy' programme a few months ago, (love that woman!) Kids had been playing or somethingy, anyway, one child was injured. The woman took the child to the A&E for a checkup, child was fine blah blah blah. This woman was claiming for medical costs incurred. Judge Judy asked her if she had insurance and the woman said yes, but she hadn't claimed. Judge Judy wanted to know why not. So the woman said that since the other boy had caused it she didn't see why her insurance company should be burdened with the costs. Judge Judy threw a hissy! :D Said if she had insurance, she must use it, that is what insurance is for, its not for her to decide that this family should be taught a lesson and morally pay for the costs. If she is insured, use it.

Now I know that this is the UK and not USA, but I think people are trying to take the moral highground out of something which is clearly accidental. Who are we to dictate when or when not something should be claimed from insurance? The amount of slime out there making a living off insurance is far greater than someone trying to claim for a legit accidental damage.
