Police

We must all be shocked that the two women police officers were killed whilst undertaking their routine duties in Manchester.

If any of their families read posts on here please accept my sincere condolences in their very sad bereavement.

It is astonishing that the police officer who was apparently called a pleb in Downing Street can feel justified in making a such an issue of this at a time when two of his colleagues have lost their lives so tragically.
Forgotten but not gone.

Why not? Two officers have been murdered in the line of duty, a duty which is to protect a public who are often rude and hostile. The incident is showing the hypocrisy of many, to be insulting and hostile to the very people you demand come running to your aid when you most need help.
  • A big thumbs up to the Police. They do a wonderful job in very very difficult circumstances. My heart goes out to the families of the two girls.

It's absolutely terrible what happened to the two officers in Manchester. Absolutely senseless.

The guy in London though is complaining for political reasons. The police don't like the cuts so take as many opportunities as possible to make the Tories look bad. They demanded the ministers resignation yesterday. Calling him a pleb was out or order but it does sound like the policeman was being a pleb!

    Not sure about this.

One thing that has been lacking from all the reports I've seen is any indication of why the officer involved told Mitchell to get off his bike and use the other exit.

If he was correctly invoking an official rule, then he simply doing his duty in a conscientious manner.

If, on the other hand he just took it into his head that only cars were allowed to use the gate when there is not such rule then he was being a berk and required correction from his superiors.

However, in neither case was it appropriate for Mitchell, a senior government official, to throw a tantrum and, quite honestly, he deserves whatever he gets.

  • I echo the condolences for the families and friends of the officers who were tragically killed in Manchester. I work with the police on a regular basis and have a great deal of respect for the job they do and I am continually surprised by the situations they are sent into without means to protect themselves - and that they continue to go because they believe in the job.

The issue with the politician in Downing Street calling an officer a pleb and having a hissy fit is totally separate. I really don't understand how what happened in Manchester should impact on what happens with the Downing Street case - if anything, to me the timing makes the politician's behaviour look worse! To say that because two people were killed means that anyone who has an issue short of being killed should just ignore it is nonsense.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

The two officers manning the Downing Street gate made note of the incident and reported it to their superior officer, it is the Sun newspaper, the police union and the Labour party who are making a big issue over the incident. If however Andrew Mitchell did make those comments then in my opinion he should go as it is totally inappropriate for a minister of his standing to abuse police officers doing their duty.

Can we stop elevating the status of police constables to officer status, most of the police are employed as constables, officer status only being above sergeants.

Have you got a link to support that? I know that's true for the army but I'm pretty sure it isn't for the police.
