So I registered my car down at the university, knowing that I'll be living here and the car would be staying here for 99% of the time, and I was told today that apparently that I have a dual post code?

The woman on the phone told me that it "clearly says" on the ts and c's that dual post codes aren't allowed, whereas the document pack they sent me mentions absolutely nothing about dual post codes, but they still are adamant that this is a part of their t's &c's

I put the phone down and called someone else. Though credit to that woman, at least she wasn't rude about it like the next person was

I literally had a massive argument going around in circles for about 10 minutes for Hastings Smart Miles to give me an email to see the T's & C's where they eventually gave in and sent me a "document pack" where it also says that I am a student living away from home and I've obviously registered my university address because that's where Im living

I can also not find the word "dual" any where in their T's & C's

I don't know myself. I live at university, but according to them because I go home sometimes, the car won't be at university, so that would be a dual post code?

Well, it's term time tbf, but most of the time I'm at the uni. My insurance specifically says "student - living away from home" though and it doesn't mention the word "dual" any where in the t's & c's but the advisers on the phone are adamant that it's there?

The company is Hastings Smart Miles btw

Ask them to point you to the terms that prevent you from having 2 addresses on your policy.

If they cannot then a letter in writing send recorded delivery headed official complaint. Seems in order.

I presume you mentioned this when taking out the policy.

Lol. That was a headache. The entire conversation (About 20 minutes worth) was something like this

Me:Hi, I was told that I apparently have a dual post code and I'd like to see the t's and c's
    Them: It's on our website
Me: No that's the t's and c's of your website
    Them: It's on your portal
    Me: It's not there
Them: Why do you want to see it any way when your insurance is going to be cancelled?
Me: I just want to see the t's and c's
Them: But you're insurance is going to be cancelled
Me: Surely I'm entitled to it. I don't mind if you have to email me etc...

We went around and round for circles for a long time, and I read the documentation. It doesn't mention dual or two

Well, what happened is before I got the car, my conversation went something like this

Me: If I get car insurance from you, could I get the box installed elsewhere or would it have to be at the address Im at now?
Them: No, you have 28 days for the installation of the box
Me: Thanks, that makes sense considering that I'm a university student and I'll have to drive it to university where it'll be staying
Them: Thanks and have a good day

Apparently, they have no correspondence of that telephone call
  • The whole point is not that you cannot have two addresses on your policy but simply you do not need to have two addresses on your policy.

It is an annual policy and you must declare where the vehicle is kept most often. Other than a small amount of shut ins I doubt anyone keeps their vehicle at the same address every single night of the year. The majority of us go away on holidays, visit friends and family etc. Some of us are unfortunate and its a night here or there, some of us are fortunate and go to our holiday house for 2 months during winter etc.

As long as the address you declare is your main residency where the vehicle spends the majority of its time there is no need to even mention the other address

    Who is cancelling your policy?

If it's them, and it is due to some default on your account, try to avoid it! (As having a cancelled policy like this on your record will be a millstone for evermore!)

Well the woman asked me what my address is. I told her well my university address is "xxxx" and she started going on about dual post codes etc...

Well they'd say that my insurance would be "invalidated"
