no we didnt at the time i was working and on a decent income,my wife was a stay at home mum and we both had to pay the same,at the time that was almost £300 a year, the previous year our "rates"bill had been £340in total
that was hardly fair was it?

So you were a family, not just you. I guess your children were educated, used libraries, increased the household rubbish that needed to be taken away.

It was going to cost you an extra £260 a year, which probably more accurately reflected the amount of services you used instead of the old system.

I guess you haven't paid council tax for many years and have no idea of how much people are having to find. The burden of paying for local services needs to be spread more fairly.
  • Its amazing just how many folks are divided and how easy it is to be devided.:(
  • Ive had a similar letter. They want me to pay 25%, so around 20£ a month. Ill also have to pay rent as my house has a spare bedroom. I tried to move but they havent got enough one bedroom properties and they told me I had no chance of ever getting one, so they took me off the register and gave me the permanent tenancy for the house Im in. I have lived here for 22years.

I have written to the council to ask them how I am to manage to pay them, they must have done their sums to work out the unemployed can pay 25% CT, so I want to know how cos I cant get the sums to work for me.

Its not the local councils who are to blame, its the government cutting funding and then at the same time telling local authorities they have run the scheme themselves.

Councils are trying to spread the impact out as much as they can but people are still going to be hit with at last a 20% cut to be able to manage with the reduced funding.

Again, not a council decision - the council have to implement the rules that are made by the DWP.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Is there a website that works out how much we will all get when the changes happen in April?

I just wish someone would pay my CT,£165.00 per month and they won't even empty my green garden bin...I wheeled it to the end of the drive with walking stick in one hand and they said it's too heavy for a young fit guy to wheel and put onto the hydraulic lifter??

I undertand the councils will have their own schemes and they're currently in consultation mode regarding designing those (although I can't for the life of me find this mysterious Gateshead council consultation survey)... so the simple answer will be definitely not yet.
