How many years ago was that?

My nephew got quotes higher than that for a moped.

Is £300 as a learner? I got quotes close to that when looking but as soon as
they passed their test it rocketed.

Possibly on a classic car and they live in a low risk area with several vehicles insured so insurer has done a good rate to keep the other business.

Don't be tempted to put the insurance in your name. Not only will this be seen as attempted fraud by insurers, in the event of an accident you will be pursued by insurers for their outlay and end up with a cancelled policy and possibly a criminal conviction.

Recent case reported - parent purchased and insured vehicle for any driver. Told daughter she was insured to drive so she carried on merrily. Involved in accident - insurance produced to police - excluded anyone under 25. Parent hefty fine and one year's suspension.

Buy a 1ltr engine 12 v car. Add on experienced additional drivers (saved £1000 approx on daughters insurance by adding her dad and aunt). Adjust excess and mileage on quotes. Daughter paid £1330 on a 10 month policy ,gets 1yr ncb.HTH

Policy in her own name and she is the main driver.

That may have been about having a black box in the car, which gives the insurer feedback on how you drive.

You may actually find that an old car with a big engine is cheaper.

My daughter (18) was quoted about £500 for a 20-year old Volvo estate. They are so unfashionable that the number of 18-year olds who have crashed one is miniscule.
Unfortunately my daughter prefers the 1.4 Ltr Peugeot 306, which costs twice as much.

Things have changed dramatically since then.
17 year olds have been hammered with insurance increases.

My daughter insured her classic mini for £550 two years ago, when she was 17.
That was a classic policy, (including commuting though) now no longer available to under 21's.
She moved to mainstream insurers, 18, (no ncd with the classic policy) it was £550 again. This time it was £330 with 1 year ncd at 19.

The next one is coming along, and will be driving this year, the best price I could find was £900 on a Fiat 126, age 17, in her name.
The old Morris Marina came next.
    Few more here.

Usual thing like adding parents etc. helps.

YES YES, Make her drive the marina, Proper driving experience :)

Mind you top gear may have bought the good ones to drop piano's onto.

Is it possible to request how many cars top gear have bought and trashed in the making of the show?

They and the Brainiacs show seemed to help push up 2ng hand prices of caravans. :)

5 years after i bought my £4000 used caravan a dealer offered £500 less as trade in.
