    HI Matt,

interested in hearing how much money you gain from the 123 account? I'm yet to hear anyone say anything positive about the Spanish bank, has always put me off

  • Hi Pavlovs

Well I've been with Santander and before them the Abbey for 20+ years. I had one occasion years ago where I got annoyed with them for the charges made. Once that was resolved and came back to them, its been great with them. All the staff I've dealt with have been so helpful, some are on first name terms and say hello out of branch! The accounts and products have been good for me. I have our mortgage with them and its enabled me to start this journey. I think the 123 account cashback will give approx £15-18 per month back on my direct debits. They have also started to pay 1% cashback on your mortgage DD if you have a Santander mortgage. All in all I'm very happy to do my banking with them.

    Hope this helps.
Mortgage at Highest- £126.995 Aug 2006
    Mortgage- (Lightbulb moment, Sep 12) £95,571. (Jul13) £92,616 (Oct14) £88,224
    OP Since Sep 12- £11,401.13, currently £8,416
    Original Finish Date- Aug 2032

  • Had a chat to the nice lady on the phone in the mortgage department. She gave me an update and setup the online access for us.

    Balance- £95,161
If I use the savings pot to help clear the mortgage- 8 years 0 months.
Not using the savings- 12 years 2 months.

This is based on me continuing to pay £800 a month. So if I carry on to do my OP then I'm sure that 12 years will come down nicely. Hopefully I can stick to my original 7 years and keep the savings pot as well. Gotta have a plan! :T

We have three rewards accounts - one in my name, one in dh's and one joint one.
I have standing orders set up from a savings account that bounces through each of the accounts over a few days and back into savings.
£15 a month = £180 a year which the overpayment calculator tells me is best being paid in a lump sum rather than monthly so each £15 goes into the savings and earns a bit of interest while it waits!!
The two individual accounts were set up online so didn't take much to do but you have to go in for the joint account where they will try to sell you more but I stuck to my guns (and was even honest that I just wanted the account for the £5 :o)

Totally worth it even if you just go for the individual account!

  • Thank you to all of you that have replied and written about the Halifax accounts. I've worked out that over the course of my planned 7 years of mortgage paying, I could get back £1,260 in cashback! When I think of it as being £5 per account, per month, I'm not overly enthusiastic. When I see the final big numbers, I'm sold into it!

Its not the 10th yet so the Direct Debit will come out on Monday but I wanted to update my monthly OP. I get excited to pay it each month! Very sad I know. But its another £244 in OP. Yay!!!

I will now pull my finger and get ebay and car forum selling. There must be a few quid of bits to part with. I'll keep this updated with the progess on selling.

    Have a good weekend folks!

It's not JUST the money, it's the fact that it's a little bit of money coming in mid-month to keep your interest up :)
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
    :) Mortgage Balance = £0 :)

Ahh I see. That sounds good. I wouldn't think I'll have trouble with keeping the interest there for me. I'm finding this process fascinating, pre OP's the mortgage was a very boring chunk of money leaving the account each month. Now I look forward to it going!!!

Once full online access for the mortgage is sorted, my interest will be there permanently as I can check the accounts regularly and tidy them up with small and often OP.

I managed to buy a couple of small stocking filler xmas pressies last night using HotUKDeals website. 3 items just over £3 each. I don't see this deal website mentioned on here much, is it widely known and used?

Have a great day everyone. De-clutter and maybe putting some bits on ebay for me :T

    Anything exciting?

HUKD is often talked about on the 'Quick, Grabbit while you can' forum. Please will post deals from there and refer back to the HUKD poster who found the deal, or vice versa.

happy decluttering - it's very cathartic, isn't it?

  • I'm still de-cluttering, a quick break on here! I want to fill the recycle bin with paperwork today. Empty this morning.

Pressie wise, I bought a posh Harrods/ Hello Kitty pink rubber duck for my Mrs (bonkers!) as she dropped hints at it. £3.45 delivered! And two candied ginger wash scrub and body butter for her also.
