  • Top effort from all of us today then :j, well done squeakysue and tiglath (and any lurkers).

We had a great result, DH said he'll happily eat the bacony-lentily-saucey-soupy thing again!! I had it for lunch today, both had it over mash for tea and there's enough for my lunch tomorrow too. Put that together with it feeding all three of us in a pasta dish last Friday and I think one packet of MrS cooking bacon (99p) did extremely well:T

Onwards to tomorrow now. HM ready meal for DD for tea and HM chilli from freezer for us, then shooting off out

    Night all

Can see my list slowly reducing, will be planning this weeks meals around my freezer contents so will be having roast beef, gammon egg and chips, takeaway secret donner kebabs, chicken pie made with Filo pastry. Lunches for me will be soups and maybe the casserole portion. Packed lunches are sorted still for a couple of weeks so will only be buying potatoes, onions, mushrooms, milk, cereal and salad this week. After my sons birthday and the after school bills it's great to have a plan and not spend to much out on food :j

How is everybody else getting on?

There is a similar thread that you might find interesting about eating from the freezer and cupboards.

I fully endorse this, Lynsey, Kirri and the girls really helped me manage my food bill for a minimum when I followed it for a few months, these habits have held fast and I've become incredibly controlled with my supermarket spending.

  • Hi VfM4meplse
Yes, I'd missed it with it not being on the old-style forum. I've since found it and been having a good old nosey about :j.

Last night was leftover veg from Sunday roast (chick leg for DH and cod for myself and DD) with 2 of the "mystery meats" from the freezer - both of which turned out to be chicken, although I would have put money on one being pork loin right up until I got it out of the packet!!

Quite a few packs of cooked red cabbage and apple went into the freezer over the weekend but that's because myself and DD can't get through a whole cabbage that quickly and DH doesn't eat it. BUT nothing new has been bought to go in freezer and I wouldn't have wanted to waste it.

fish again for tea I think with beetroot from veg box and green cabbage.

Is anyone else feeling inspired to eat from their stocks this week?

I have been trying to eat up from my stocks for a while now. I had a small stock cupboard but have turned it into a linen cupboard.

I found it too easy to go into the stock cupboard and get packets of crisps and chocolate biscuits that I thought would last much longer.

Also, my freezer is playing up and is noisy and as I have an open plan room I cannot get away from the noise so I want to get a quiet one to replace it.

I'm also trying to lose weight - unfortunately my freezer contains quiches, pizzas and has 2 dishes of vegetables in cheese sauce. However it does also have lots of quorn pieces and mince, alongside a solitary bag of peas and some frozen cheese so I don't use too much of it at a time. Once defrosted the cheese just crumbles in my hand, no need to grate it.

So at the moment I am buying mainly milk, eggs, bread (I have flour so I should make more) and vegetables. I have also been buying little tins of baked beans for quick meals.

All my biscuits, cakes, chocolate and biscuits have gone but if I fancy something sweet now I will have to make cakes or pancakes with the ingredients I have in stock. Welsh cakes probably - I can get quite inventive late at night if I want something sweet other than a jam sandwich.

  • Hi Frogletina, nice to "meet" you!
The problem with my freezer now is that I have to try and cut out wheat to see whether or not i'm intolerant - lots of things in my freezer are bread or pastry based . Looks like I'll be living on home-made soup for a while!!!

    Hello craftybear

I have high cholesterol so I am trying to cut down on cheese, I had one of my granddaughters around recently but she has just been diagnosed as a coeliac so couldn't help me eat any of the food up either as she can't eat wheat.

I couldn't bear to throw food out so I think I will be eating it slowly for quite a while yet.

    Good luck with your testing

Oooh - now this is exactly what i need to do for two reasons.

    1. I am moving house (mortgage permitting:cool:) and need to empty freezer

    2. I need to save as much as i can for the Move.

I have a a night to myself tonight (rare in my house) - so am heading for the cellar to check the freezer , I will post contents later.

PS. If I havent posted by tomorrow morning can someone please send St bernard / Brandy / thermal rescue equipment to my cellar. (cos its FREEZING down there) and I just may never be seen again amongst the plethora of packing boxes :D

  • Fish pie for one done from freezer stock - one boil in bag fish in butter sauce, mixed with frozen peas (both cooked first) topped off with leftover mash and cheese - i feel very virtuous now! Might even have ice cream for pudding - well, it does need eating up lol :rotfl:
