pollyanna I know its hard, but please try not to get into a competition with your daughter's dad over who spends the most/gets the flashiest pressies for their child. It helps no-one, its not a competition. As you rightly point out, she will appreciate a cheap bracelet far more than a tablet, because thats what she actually wants and has asked for :D.

Get her what she wants rather than what you want to buy her

I'm trying to think what to get my 4yr old for her bday. I was thinking some kind of tablet that she might like. She is obsessed with my iPhone (I have toddler games and things downloaded on it) and my brother's iPad (again, he has stuff downloaded for her), but I know there are other things out there like LeapPad (spent a bit of time in Toys R Us yesterday).

When I asked her today what she'd like, she said "Rings... Bracelets... lots of bracelets.... Necklaces... lots of necklaces and lots of dresses!!

So now I'm thinking that she's not old enough for her own tablet, but when she's allowed to play with mine or my brother's, then it's enough for her. That if she has her own, the novelty will wear off.

    What do other people think?

I'm going to go slightly against the general consensus here simply because I've seen how much DS2 has achieved by having access to an iPad. So I'm going to shout about it: iPads, used properly, can be a great educational tool for young children, especially those with special needs!

But no, I'm not going to suggest you buy her one. I would suggest that you buy what she's asked for and maybe a fancy stand to hang her new necklaces etc on.

Why not buy an iPad for family use if you can afford it after loading her down with trinkets. There are some brilliant apps that can help develop key skills such as hand/eye coordination, letter learning etc. even if a child doesn't have special needs. Make sure you buy a good case for it as well: otterbox and griffin do very stout ones.

Think I was going to get her one to compensate for the fact that I'm not having a birthday party this year and also because I'm sure her father (we're not together) will get her something "fabulous" and I want to match up to him.

You're her mum - she already thinks you're fabulous :D And let's face it, in the eyes of a 4 year old, a box full of dressing up stuff has the same value as any other expensive present. They are very much into quantity rather than quality at that age :rotfl:
