Android Tablet/iPad for 4 yr old

  • And it's also 'Oh my DD, she had an ipad at 4. Kids these days, eh?'.

    Sigh.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • Is this post for real? Seriously, get a grip, she is four years old, a tablet will entertain her for all of five minutes until it's dropped and broken. Wouldn't you rather encourage creative play, using imagination etc than have her glued to a computer?

  • I'd get her a Leappad or innotab. Although you can get toddler games ect on the ipad it will probably end up broken. Leappad/innotab are made for younger children and do not break as easy after they have dropped loads of times.
  • My daughter is nearly 9 and it wouldnt even enter her head to ask for an iPad!! For Xmas she would like books, arty/crafty things and some plastic animals.

Or - what about getting her the trinkets she asked for?

  • Give her what she wants.

    Rings.....bracelets.....dresses, lots of dresses.........

    Sounds fine to me.

Dressing up gear sounds so much better for her than sitting with a boring bit of tech that she can't participate with - it's only observing.

Like being on here, it's not life, it's talking about life.

Save the tablet for later. And then have it as yours, letting her use it.

I think there its a big difference between letting a child used his parents tablet/phone and getting them one of their own. It gives the message that it is ok to be entitled to the same toys as a child then an adult. I want my children to see the rewards you get from working hard for them and I feel this message won't be there if they get the same rewards than the ones I get as a working adult. what will they ask for when they become teenagers and expectations will increase but will still be financially dependent on parents.

There seem to be a lot of these type threads at the moment- it's quite sad really, the constant societal pressure to provide children with the latest must-have gadget if only to show off to friends and family! (sorry OP if this is not you)

It's when you hear 'oh but all their friends have them......' well now we know how it starts.

If kids are getting ipads at such a young age...what do they expect by the time they are 12? Their first car??

She's 4 - let her have toys and trinkets.

Isn't there a Fisher Price pretend ipad, anyway?

What on earth will she want when she leaves primary school - it'll be a trip to the moon for her 18th!

  • Teehee, thanks for everyone's comments. Looks like the overall view is that she is too young for one of them then!

I hadn't even thought of her being too young for one of them actually. She plays with my iPhone and my brother's iPad, but obviously she has to ask for them and it's not whenever she feels like it. In fact, it's generally if she gets up ridiculously early that I let her play with my iPhone while I'm still sleeping! And she plays with my brother's iPad if her sister has taken over the telly before bed time.

Think I was going to get her one to compensate for the fact that I'm not having a birthday party this year and also because I'm sure her father (we're not together) will get her something "fabulous" and I want to match up to him.

But I think I'll spend the next few weekends when the girls are with their dad just collecting trinkets and little things. It's true that she'd probably appreciate a 50p bracelet more than an expensive computer anyway and there's nothing to stop her still playing with my iPhone.
