Well you could say these scammers aren't actually 'stealing'. whether you leave the bag out for a charity or a bogus collector its only old unwanted clothes and goods you want rid of.

You receive nothing for it either way.

Its no worse than your recycling bin which you actually pay to be emptied through your council tax but the glass etc is sold.

I would much rather these scumbags make a living from re-selling peoples cast offs than break into my home.

Also the prices in charity shops have gone way over the top. They used to be a good place for bargain hunting, now I don't bother because I can buy brand new items for even less elsewhere.

Well known charities will always welcome donations, personally i usually give to places like your local air ambulance or others like Oxfam.

A lot of doorstep collectors only pick up to line there own pockets, they give a minimum donation to a charity, and the rest they absorb into there own coffers.

Support your local charities, they really need the help.

I agree with whoever said up there ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

If you want to donate stuff to charity, take it to the shop. It may be more bother but at least you know where it's going.

We do occasionally leave stuff out for charity, but we leave them in the branded bags for known charities such as Age Concern, BHF, Oxfam, Banardos. Yes there is a chance it will be stolen, but a small chance. We do take stuff out to the shops of smaller, local charities too.

Of course being moneysavers, all our clothes get mended and downgraded on a downward spiral. Best -> Everyday -> Hanging round the house -> Decorating. Apart from my wife's nicest going out stuff, very little is saleable even before the decorating phase.

Our son's clothes are saved for his potential siblings and cousins, apart from the stuff that had already been passed on twice.

We would not use the bin liners attached to a leaflet with a company number- they scream "don't touch me".
  • I put all of these in the recycling bin I would rather take my stuff to the hospice shop

Got a leaflet through the door for this just now too.
  • I've just this morning had one of the collection bags and leaflets from an organisation based in Lithuania collecting unwanted clothing etc.

I've reported it to Consumer direct and would urge everyone to do the same. You can call their direct number to log details on 0845 4040506.

The more people who register a complaint, the more likely action will be taken.

I find doorstep collections very convenient so do make good use of them. However, I take great exception to scammers of any kind - take the time to report it and give Trading Standards the evidence they need to take action.

If a registered charity is involved the charity number has to be put on the literature. This is not the same as a company number.
    Important point.

These firms often make a point of putting the company registration number prominently. Most people don't know the difference and mistake the one for the other.

Whenever I get one of these I think ... mmm ... free bin bag!
