Vodafone rant

Hello!

last night i received this phonecall

Ring ring
Me: Hello?
Lady: Hi i'm calling on behalf of Vodafone and we're checking security, as you don't have a password on record is it ok to check your details?
Me: ummm ok
Lady: Ok can you tell me your full name, DOB and Address?
Me: ummm, can't you tell me what you have and i'll tell you if its right?
Lady: no, i'm from Vodafone, can you jsut tell me please?
Me: no its ok, i'll call vodafone directly and let them know, i don't mind calling them
Lady: But i have to do it, i work for Vodafone
Me: ok, but i'm sure they won't mind if i ring them direct.
Lady: But vodafone have employed my company to do it!
Me: ahh so you don't work for vodafone then?
Lady: Oh wel F**k off then! *hangs up*

So i ring vodafone to inform them of this obvious scam, they tell me it wasnt a scam, there really were people calling on behalf of them! i'm shocked!

I was a bit annoyed with them already as when i upgraded i was put onto a 12 month contract and then went back 2 weeks later to get a different phone (which i was told i could do within the 2 weeks) and they changed it to an 18 month one, now they won't change me back! its so frustrating!

My bank does this occasionally. They phone me and insist I then identify myself to them! I tell them I won't be doing it, so they tell me they will write to me about the issue, so I say fine thanks very much and you know what? Not ONCE have I had a letter from them about anything that they might possibly been ringing about.

I know it is something that they do and not necessarilly a scam because I phoned them to find out the first time it happened. I also have no objection to them establishing my identity as we are going to be talking about my private details and if it wasn't me, I wouldn't want them talking to not-me! What I object to is THEY phone ME, demand that I identify myself....but when I ask them to identify themselves, they say "well, I work for ***** *****" (Cos thats going to convince me!) and then sound shirty when I refuse to identify myself because I don't know who they are!

It may well be but with all the phishing scams that are going on I'm certainly not going to give out information to any Tom !!!!!! or Harry that calls me claimimg to be from XYZ Ltd and refusing to identify thenselves to me.

I've had calls from various credit card companies and the converstaions have gone very much along the lines of the OPs. Strangely I've never had a letter either.

I have had a call from my bank about my account where the message referred to both myself and my OH - when I rang back, I refused to speak to them about my account as the message had been for both of us. They ended up apologising for the mistake, and as Morty said, they never took me up on my offer to work out who they wanted to speak to, then write to me/us.

yeah thats the thing that worried me, that she was so insitant that i'd jsut beleve her that she was from vodafone jsut beucase she said so!

when she told me to F off i thought oh thank god i didnt give details, it was obviously a scam. Couldnt beleive it when they said it wasnt (but then they didnt ask me to confirm my address so they couldnt have been that bothered by it!)

It just amazes me that companies do this, even though its all over email and news that they will never ask you for your details.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I won't get into any conversation like this over the phone. Most of the time these conversations (if legitimate) benefit THEM anyway i.e. trying to get you onto a new contract, upgrade your account etc. If you think carefully when was the last time anyone called you to save YOU, not them money? If anyone says they have a problems with your account just says "thanks I'll ring you back" then get a number for Customer Services from any written correspondance and ring them back. Don't ring them on a number they give you. Whatever company you deal with if there is a problem the details will be on your account, not just with the one person that rang you up.

Oops I missed the bit about her telling you to F off! Send a registered letter to the MD of Vodaphone detailing what you have written here. This woman may not work for Vodaphone but she is acting on their behalf and I am sure that Vodaphone (if they really want to) can find out who she is. If you do not get satisfaction then it might be worth e-mailing The Sun/ Daily Mirror consumer sections see if you get any joy.

Why don't they ask for a letter from your maiden name, or the confirm the day you were born?

That way if its genuine they know, and if its a scam the info is useless on its own..

Are Vodafone interested that you were told to F*** off? Did they apologies?
