    Well, just not being able to take them isn't really good enough. Employers are supposed to make sure employees take their 5.6 weeks of paid leave, whether the employee wants to or not. I know we see threads from people where leave has been refused, but the advise is to ask when the leave CAN be taken because legally it can't just be continually refused!

    Of the 5.6 weeks statutory you can carry over upto 1.6 weeks for a maximum of one year.

    additional contactual holidays can be caried over for longer


    If you are unable to take the holiday due to sick or maternity(that means after return there is not enough time to take the holiday) then you are legaly entitled to carry over the holiday even if the employer does not like it.

    holiday accrues during sick and maternity.

    There are a few gotchas the common one being employers that refuse holiday and will not let you carry over.

    My employers have allowed holiday to roll ever into the next year if contiguous with a holiday taken in the holiday year(eg into Jan) and usualy 5 days unalocated by financial year end so 3 months end march(to avoid the financial liabitity carry over), thats on a holiday year Jan-Dec.



    in reality if agreed you can carry over all holidays since the regulations are not enforced.

    In my last job (Civil Service) I was allowed to carry up to ten days forward,not that I ever managed to have any left to do that.
  • 5 days carried forward, plus up to an additional days with line manager's permission in exceptional circumstances - the latter to be used by the end of June
  • Officially none, but sometimes people get special permission. Last year I ran out of time to take all my holidays and deadlines were tight so I got paid for them instead.
  • I'm allowed to carry 5 days over to the following year to be used by the end of March.
    Debt 30k in 2008.:eek::o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free :)
    Mortgage free since 2014 :)

    In a previous job I was allowed to carry over 5 days, and in my current job they all have to be taken in the given year.
  • At the end of the day, in answer to the OP, without each poster going into their individual cases:

    By law you have no right to carry it over, unless you have been on sick or maternity leave, which has prevented you using up your allocated leave.

    Apart from that it is up to the individual employer.

    We are allowed to carry over 9 days and I always do. Just in case!!:)
