How many holidays can you CARRY Forward, to the following year?

If you have holidays at work, unused in one year, to stop them being wasted you can carry them forward..

How many holidays can you usually carry on forward to the next year?

    Usually none in my job (NHS clerical staff). The only exceptions are if you had a long period off sick when you were unable to use your annual leave (I think I've seen a maximum of 10 days carried over in this case), or possibly if it is arranged a long time in advance with your manager's approval, although I can't think of anyone I know who has been allowed to do this. Medical staff appear to have much more flexibility with carrying days over though.

  • Most places I've worked it's been none, but one place was 5 days that had to be used within 3 months.

  • Mine are use them or lose them. You can request to carry forward up to 5 days but only if it's agreed with a manager that there's a good reason you hadn't taken the leave sooner. If carry-forward is permitted, the days have to be used in the first 6 weeks of the new holiday year.

    It is occasionally agreed that more than 5 days can be carried forward if you've tried to use leave but have been asked not for work purposes i.e. to hit a deadline / complete a project.

    We can carry 5 but we have to use them by the end of March ( holiday year is Jan to Dec) to be fair I never have any left.

  • It's up to your employer but usually they won't let you carry forward any days that would drop you below the legal minimum for the year. So if you have 25 days holiday plus the 8 bank holidays you could carry over 5 days if they let you.

    It's up to your employer but usually they won't let you carry forward any days that would drop you below the legal minimum for the year. So if you have 25 days holiday plus the 8 bank holidays you could carry over 5 days if they let you.
    This is correct: if the employer only gives the statutory minimum then they shouldn't be allowing you to carry ANY leave forward (unless you've been off sick or on maternity leave and therefore unable to take it at the 'right' time).

    Usually you can't, unless there are special circumstances, like you have been on long term sick leave.

    However some employers may allow this in the private sector. But you would have to ask your employer.
