In the days when our son was young enough to wander whilst we were still in bed, but old enough to switch the bath taps on, we put a metal 'hook and eye' (sorry don't know correct term) on the outside of the door at the top. Yes it would make a hole, but nothing that couldn't be sorted with wood-filler and paint when you left and wouldn't be noticeable as it's at the top. Though it would depend on whether the inital trying to get into the room and unable to would sort the problem or whether he'd look for what was locking the door to undo.0
