I'm hoping this doesn't sound like a daft question...
Can anyone tell me if speed cameras take photos of the side of the road it's situated on (ie. of the back of the car), or whether they also track cars on the other side of the road as well (ie. taking photos of the front of the car)?
I was doing 44mph (over Chiswick Bridge (40mph zone - I know, stupid me) in London, going towards Richmond, but I'm pretty certain that the car 30-40 yards ahead of me was doing as much, if not more...so the camera flashed about 4 times in the space of 5 seconds.
I recently read a story saying that the speed camera technology was being improved so that photos could be taken of speeding traffic on both sides of the road.
(Although that doesn't mean that the Chiswick Bridge cameras didn't already have this technology).
I've got a hunch that there wasn't any traffic at all going away from the camera, if this helps!
Cheers,
Mistryman

Have you tried looking on https://www.pepipoo.com ? I dont know the answer afraid but would have thought the technology will be getting rolled out pretty fast to get people on both sides of the road which wasnt previously the caseWeight Loss - 102lb0

Depends on the camera the Gatso ones take pictures from the rear these are currently the most popular camera however the Truvelo type take pictures from the front. You going to have to wait to see if you get a ticket
Edit Actually thinking about it the forward facing ones don't flash they use an infra red system so you wouldn't see the flash so you have probably got away with it."The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

if it flashed - watch the post.

You can usually see which side it's aimed at by how the box is "angled" and if there are lines on your side of the road... were there ANY lines at all? If there were then there is a chacne you might have gotten snapped but if your speedo was reading 44 then you were more than likely only doing about 40 maybe 41 so I would contest it if you did get a little notice through the door and ask for proof because you don't believe you were doing 44mph. When I had our car tested we found it reads about 8% faster than the speed it's actually doing... I don't mind that as I tend to stick to the speed limit and it gives me a tiny bit of extra mental leeway so I don't panic if it says 41 in a 40 zoneDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! I can't see you getting a ticket for 4mph over the limit. The cameras are usually allow for an extra 10% on top of the speed limit before it flashes. This country is called Great Britain. It would be called Amazing Britain if it wasn't for people like you pulling the average down0

Actually, it's a lottery. According to the guardian, some cameras will flash you for going 3-4 mph over the limit whereas others won't flash till you're 10-15 mph over the limit.
Typical!

I thought you only got done by the front facing ones if they were on your side of the road!
I drive past one on the way home from work and if you go fast enough (yes I know, I know  ) you can set it off and make people on that side of the road think they have been caught! :rotfl:0 -
Official guidelines are speed limit plus 10% plus an extra 2mph. Not that all police forces stick to the guidelines, mind you.
I think you're OK. If your speedo said 44mph, chances are you were only doing about 40mph anyway. Speedos are allowed to be 10% out, and guess what, they always err on the above side (I reckon it's so motoring reviewers think the 0-60mph time is less than it really is!).0 -

If the Police haven't reached their quota, they'll do you for 1 mph over the limit.
ACPO guidelines are to allow 10% + 1mph. Not all forces adopt these guidelines. The differences are designed to lure the motorist into a false sense of security.
