Damned speed cameras - advice required please!

I'm hoping this doesn't sound like a daft question... Can anyone tell me if speed cameras take photos of the side of the road it's situated on (ie. of the back of the car), or whether they also track cars on the other side of the road as well (ie. taking photos of the front of the car)? I was doing 44mph (over Chiswick…

That doesn't make any sense unless the check that no traffic is coming the other way when they flash... Speed cameras couldn't possibly cause a hazard themselves, could they?
