Finally settling tonight. We agreed on a fee of £100.

I have another tree surgeon coming next week to finish the job for £185. He said that the height if the try wouldn't have made much difference to his quote as he would have started at the height I have asked for. Might cost a bit more for the rubbish.

Thanks everyone for your input on this thread, even those who's posts I didn't agree with, it's always good to have different opinions and highlighted a few things that I hadn't considered.

LOL at the indignant posters sticking up for the cowboy.
Well I can't see that advising that he be given a chance seeing as he's straight out of the egg is standing up for him.
He quoted too cheap so he could undercut competant business's and take the work from them. Then he can't do the job (even with help from the neighbour!) and still wants his money. And you lot think he's hard done by.
You only have one side of the story as ever. So I was right about a too cheap quote then? Ho hum.
    Only on MSE.....

I think that's what you would call a lesson to be had all round:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

The only real winner is the guy that comes next week that has only half the job to do.;);)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Finally the saga is over. The proper tree surgeons turned up yesterday, complete with the right equipment and finished the hedge off perfectly - it looks great!

My neighbour, who just happened to be home again, reckons in took them less than 1/2 an hour to complete and tidy up.

The hedge now has a lovely straight line across the top and it's now at a height that means I can maintain it myself.

Thanks everyone for their thoughts expressed on this thread.

I know where you are coming from but you also have to pay for their time in getting to and from the site. Cost of wear and tear on their equipment, fuel, wages, time to get to the disposal site, cost of disposal. All in all you (well your neighbour) saw less than one hours work where it could easily be three + disposal costs. Also was your neighbour curtain twitching with a stopwatch so knew how long the guys were on site? How many times have I been out in the garden for 'just an hour or so' only to notice its been half the day when I check the time!

Its not only time you are paying for. Its knowing what to do and more importantly how to do it. Most people forget about that aspect when looking at tradesmens quotes.

    Cheers

To be fair there were three of them, a couple of vans, a shredder, a garden vac/blower so it's not hard to understand their costs.

Also the fact is that they have done a brilliat job, I really don't care how long it took them. I was happy with the price, even happier with the job they have done and if it only took them 5 minites, then good luck to them.

I did think about inviting the original lad around to see the finished job and show him how I had expected the job to llok like in the first place.
