When I contacted them a few years back - although it was about hotel visits and not air flights - HMRC said that the entire income should be added up minus any costs (legitimate costs) incurred (regardless of whether it was a reimbursement only job). The end profit figure is the amount declared for tax. That isn't accordance with what some other people have been told, so it's definitely worth checking with them.
The caveat they gave is when an employer is attempting to avoid paying wages by making payment in goods/services instead of cash.
The argument would be that you are self-employed providing mystery shopping services and you undertake a range of roles to gain experience and future work. But it's one best argued with HMRC in advance, rather than after the event.
Yup pretty much what the advise here is saying, the only expense you can't put against tax would be the cost of the flights in this case.0 -
Anyone worked for 'The Silent Customer' as just posted in the alerts thread? Not heard of them before.
I've worked for them before. Great jobs, quick payments and they give good feedback on your report. The allocator is lovely
I'm south btw, they also have jobs in Yorkshire and Hertfordshire as far as I know. Hth0 -
The assignment I saw was in Worcestershire so might be pickings for midlands shoppers too.0

Hello everyone,
I'm posting on behalf of a company called Service Scan, for which I used to be an allocator but now I only recruit for.
They are looking for shoppers to do bar visits. You must be between 18 and 30 and the fee/reimbursement is very generous compared to other mystery shopping companies.
Areas of visits include: Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds
If interested, please contact Helen at helen @service-scan.com, or PM me if you are having problems.
Thank you. As this is just one post in a long thread, I would be grateful if you made others aware of this opportunity. They do have some other work in most of the UK too, so it's always worth a go.

Has anyone ever had any problems with RM payments? Do you email them or call them? I've emailed and not had any response yet and was just wondering.
Also, has anyone been paid for the RA station shops? They owe me a fair whack and it's not been received yet. They made another tiny payment but God knows what that one's for? Any ideas?0 -

I wonder if it would make a difference if you managed to get a load of jobs in the airport or if you got some in the destination country? Perhaps then you could argue that you needed to go on the flight to get the other work?0 -

I had a question over the recent premiums we've just been paid and I dropped them an e-mail payments@retail-maxim.co.uk
Now I didn't get a direct reply to my e-mail but I did receive an e-mail with a payment summary attached. Being my first payment from RM, I'm not sure if the payment summary is a monthly standard procedure.0 -

I emailed that too but no response yet. May have to give them a tinkle tomorrow. No way are they getting out of paying for the postage. If they think I am paying that's totally cleared the fee for the visit. Absolutely no chance!0 -
I got the pay summary yesterday and noticed they missed payment of a mini market this month, I emailed them yesterday but no reply as yet.0
