  • Aww thank you everyone :) happy belated birthday to you too Superliss! Johnny that is odd re GAP as I usually find the website doesn't send my enquiries and I end up calling them. I also had a problem with RM Mimi but they sorted it out straight away. I am slightly more forgiving of them at the moment as they are working the new website and its not seeming to be as helpful as they hoped I feel! xx

Does anyone here do merchandising? If you do circuit of jobs for a company and they change the requirements after the job has been attempted, is it fair to be asked to go back and do it again for no extra money?

If you followed brief exactly at that time to completion, then you should be paid in full and if they want you to go back then it it recharged accordingly.

pm me the company if you wish, but ive never had an issue with any company trying this with me, in fact im being repaid to do a full days work on monday in similar circumstances though ive heard of a couple of people mention theyve been asked before. but essentially you did what they asked, they want something else, theyll either have to take the hit and pay you any how, or push back to the client that additional brief changes will have to be paid for by them

    ETA

I notice youve used the word : attempted ?
does that mean you didnt or couldnt complete the job ?
if your fault, they can ask you to revist, if theirs then the previous statements apply

I think I may know which ones you are talking about - I was merchandising today and after I had finished my circuit there was an email and text message saying I should go back to re-attempt some due to an item not fitting (it seemed this had been happening to several people). Mine wouldn't fit for a different reason from the reason they gave so I put that on my response form and will see what happens.

Thanks Whitelable, I'll pm you the company name.

It sounds like the same job kst101, I phoned them from the job and asked what I should do, they told me to just take a photo and leave. I had already landed home and started returning forms by the time they emailed to say they would all need re-visiting. It's my first job for them and I don't want to get on the wrong side of them from the outset but this really doesn't seem fair.

I am sad they have gotten rid of most of the allocators. The one who always said "Good Afternoon" at 9am, and "Good Morning" at 4pm is no longer there. It was like she was constantly drunk/stoned. I really liked her. Boohoo!

Does it involve newspapers? If it does, my mate's been doing a few of these, and the ammendment seems pretty obvious. If you're not reprofiling where needed, then you're not merchandising.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?

Yes, that's the one. This was my first merchandising job so I did exactly what the office told me to do then 4 hours later they changed their minds. I shouldn't have to lose half a days pay to fix it.

Right, sorry, this is going to sound harsh however I put it. Merchandising is a trade, at times quite a skilled one. Call me cynical (I am), but a big bit of that skill is being able to see through the brief and advice from the support centre and see what the client actually wants doing.

IMS basically want people who are skilled Merchandisers, who can hit the ground running. If you don't have the sklillset for the trade on the way in, your best bet is to build it up with a company that will take the time to train you (probably not paying not a lot), then move to companies and agencies that provide a bit more stimulating work and money to match.

Case in point, my mate is a time served agency merchandiser (4+ years), he rang me this morning to give him a sounding board for what he should be doing on those jobs. I've been a Merchandiser or Merchandising Manager for most of the last 10 years and I still had to read IMS' brief 3 times to suss it out.

Nothing to do with anyone being underskilled, it is quite clear that the problem is with the merchandising company in this instance.

Are the small supermarket jobs, with a name that sounds like a small bird worth it? I had a call from the MSC offering me a small fee increase, but for the amount of work- it still looks like a poor deal to me. No wonder they can't get anyone to take them, when I can walk in and out of a money saving/ lending establishment in 10 minutes and pocket virtually the same amount for very little effort.

Disappointed with the types of jobs around at the moment. Most of them seem to involve revealing yourself as a MS which I'm not prepared to do. Or setting up a tab in a pub which I'm also not prepared to take the risk on. Does MS tend to go in quarterly cycles?
