The contributions you can choose to make would give you some qualifying years towards your pension but would not entitle you to contributions based benefits but you could claim income based benefits at any time. How do you get by? If you have children then you have NI contributions being made on your behalf anyway and are better off opting out of paying any more (subject to income being low enough).
Thanks for the reply.
I get by because of Matched Betting. Been doing it for 8 years,
and have made around £280,000. But things seem to be drying up
and I'm jaded doing it.
I don't claim any benefit as OH works full time, so I claimed 6 months JSA when I came out of work about 3 years ago and haven't claimed anything since.0 -

I have recently had to start paying NI as I make too much now, so you can make a decent living at it. But all my children are in school now and I do this as my full time job.

Thanks for your reply. Very useful.
Is making £100 a week realistic without putting a huge amount
of hours into it?0 -
As assignments are generally local to you and spread out between different companies, it's hard to judge. No MS'er earns the same or works the same, the only overlap is the companies. Some companies advertise all their jobs, others you would only see local ones. Plus there are time limits for re-shopping some stores.
You make more money doing video but there is the investment in the equipment so you tend to want to work more and there is a greater risk of failed jobs and a lot more travel involved.
I would say it would be hard to earn £100 pw doing report-only (without some effort) unless you travel or live near a city with a lot of jobs available but I'm sure someone may correct me.0 -
I'd say, work on making not much more than minimum wage per hour. That includes travel, the job and the data input. Do not underestimate the amount of data input! If you can put a lot of jobs in the same area together it saves on travel, but there's still the data input when you get home.
So if you want to make £100 you would need to work up to 20 hours a week, as a rough guide. That assumes you can find 20 jobs in your locality, that you can do, want to do etc. The only way you will find out what suits you is to try some out.
You'll never get rich and it's not particularly easy. You have to have a good memory. But it's flexible and can be fun and interesting. Good luck.0 -

Before my youngest started school I made between £700 and £800 a month doing report based mystery shopping. However, this was 5 years ago and the fees are a lot smaller now than they were then. I often managed to get 2 or 3 companies to pay my mileage and parking as well. Again, this has changed and not many companies pay mileage and parking now.
The other difference is that companies did not have such tight turnarounds, so I could spend one day doing loads of jobs and then use the next day to type them all up. Lots of companies now want the report the day you do the job.
So I think £100 is possible per week, but it will be a lot harder than when I started doing this. And as it is likely that you will have to pay for travel, the £100 will not be your net amount.0
