    hi bert n ernie

it only takes 1 incident...if ds hadnt moved out of the way in time..he might not be here now...

Indeed it does, and I'm glad your son wasn't hurt. The point I am trying to make is that there are thousands of these incidents on our roads every day. Traffic calming doesn't eliminate the risk of a lorry mounting the pavement. In fact, if the scheme is botched, I would argue that it makes it more likely.

I doubt that the council will act unless you can prove that there is an excess risk of an accident on your stretch of road. It may be worth asking the council for accident figures and/or speaking to other residents and asking them if they know of similar incidents to the one your son witnessed. You could keep a log of these, and perhaps conduct your own traffic survey I.e. count the number and type if vehicle that passes over a given period. This will at least show that you are serious and organised.

Like I said, you may get some speed bumps, but that might not make the street any safer and it certainly won't make it any more pleasant.
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.

The best form of traffic calming I have seen is Road Narrowing,it is safe for both the road user(no wear and tear on the car) and the pedestrians,I have seen it on roads near where I live and it seems to work a treat(the road is cut down to one lane in places with give way markings etc).I detest speed bumps because few years back ,when I had a motorbike as my form of transport I went over a speed bump at low speed and came off with a thump! my shoulder still aches in cold weather.....Anyway keep plugging away you might get somewhere, btw have you tried canvassing the business park to let companies there know of your worries? If you and your neighbours were to politely point out the situation via leaflets etc it mey reduce the problems in your road.....good luck
I would love some decent telly on a Saturday night
  • Highways agency can sort this out. My friends dad works for them and got ours sorted even though it's not a main road.

thanks for all the kind and useful replies ;) i shall update u on this ongoing situation once ive got everything together, the residents of the road have expressed an interest of forming a residents association so hopefully we'll get listened to as a group.

Glad your friends Dad managed to sort that for you. Do you think he could do some work for me? I don't fancy going through the normal channels, too many interested parties, guidelines and rules over how roads should be built and public money spent.

It seems that most people on this threat have made their mind up about this - traffic calming is essential on this street. Perhaps we should routinely calm every street? . Better still we could block end them - both ends!

    A potential solution...

Between all of you buy two old cars, insured, taxed, MOT'd. And park them close to the entrance of your road. Creating the situation where it then becomes difficult for lorries etc. to come down. ie. cars and yourselves can get down the road.

All you would be doing here is to create a perfectly legal obstacle to prevent this sort of thing happening. You could park caravans, trailers. A couple of £250 cars would be best though.

Let me get this straight - you deliberately create an obstruction to traffic in order to encourage safe and considerate driving?

One thing used in my area to stop lorries going certain places is high sided chicanes. If lorries attempt to go through them they'll get stuck. Maybe some of these things in your area would be useful if the lorries have no reason to come down your street?!

Maybe you could barricade the entrance to the business park. Hopefully the lorries would stay away - better still, it would close. I'm sure the street would be much quieter then. The people laid off could get jobs fitting road narrowing schemes in neighbouring areas.

Sorry about the sarcasm - this thread is really bringing it out of me tonight.

Seriously though, the problem here seems to be down to the road being shared between residential use and access for commercial vehicles. I don't know whether the business park or the houses came first, but either way it smacks of bad planning.
