OP - definitey give them a bad review, and tell everyone you know. It's ridiculous that restaurants would refuse to give tap water. This happened to OH and I once as we were placing our order. The waiter flat refused to give us a jug of tap water (we were having wine as well btw). We got up and left. We told everyone we know about it, and would never go back.

There is a cost, how do you think the glasses/jugs wash themselves up? or the ice miraculously appears free?

I don't take ice, but thanks anyway. :)

On a related note, I hate getting a slice of lemon or similar in water, it makes it taste yuk. But I just fish it out if it ends up in my glass. No big deal.

  • I'm not sure when you were at uni but about 2 years ago they told me the water didn't taste nice. When I asked for a slice of lemon they didn't have any. Wasn't impressed & avoided going back until last year when some friends had arranged to meet there and they were still using the same excuse and had "run out of" lemon. Not been back since. There's plenty of other places to eat in Botanic, if you'll excuse the pun :)
On a similar theme, I asked for a glass of water with ice recently at an hotel and got ONE cube of ice in a warmish glass of water! I know there are costs involved but I was paying for a meal and wine as well. It's not great customer service.

The Other Place in botanic used to charge 25p for a glass of tap water when I was at uni. When asked why they said the water quality in the area was poor and it had to be distilled.
Wonder if they 'distilled' all the water for tea, washing etc? And if the holyland had the same undrinkable water!
If it wasn't for the 99p fry I wouldn't have been back...

Name and shame the hotel, saverbuyer!

The Other Place is rubbish, if I'm in need of a Sunday stodge fix Maggie May's is way better. And they always bring water when I ask. :) Not that I've been in ages, but I know that it's there when I need it. :D I was quite the regular there as a student.

  • Wee Bargain Hunter this was the reason given all through uni and postgrad so say from 2005 until 2010. So it seems they are still going with this story.

Totally agree. We only ended up in The Other Place because Maggie May's was packed, as it usually is. Not a single table. The Other Place was pretty quiet. Go figure.

Can't beat Maggie May's sunday morning fry with a (free) pint of water.
  • We would quite often go to what we called "The Pound Cafe" but think it was called Campbells, in CornMarket just next to Starbucks, just for a quick cuppa while shopping. It was £1 a drink. I would have got coffee and hubby a coke which was served in one of those thin plastic cups. I asked one day for a small glass of water just to take a painkiller and was charged 50p.

Now I know we only spent £2 but we would have been back maybe three times in a full day of shopping and always bought lunch there as well.

One thing that did bug was was the "toilets are being fixed" line. We were never really sure of how long this lie had been going, but we started going here well before I got married and I am now married three years and toilets are still being fixed...lol
    ;)I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY;)

I think I'll give Maggie May's a go for the fry this Sunday.

That reminds me of the time I went into Waterstone's to go to the cafe. It's up a couple of very steep staircases and I was tired and carrying heavy shopping, so I asked was there a lift. No,they said, but there's a lift next door which can be used to get to our top floor...but it's out of order.

Three months later I tried again. It was still allegedly 'out of order'.
  • Homemade in Coleraine apparently have a 'no tap water' policy :(

Have still to work out if they bought the water they made my pot of tea with... ;)
