    To review:
I'm using an Acer Aspire D270. It's brand new, I've hardly used the internet on it. Only downloaded Google Chrome browser. It came with McAfee installed for two months. It's supposedly expired but says it's still running. I've run F-secure anti-virus and Windows Defender tonight and they both say the netbook is clean of virus.

I've got Sky broadband - current download speed is 10mb, upload is 0.699mb. Normal for my area.

I rang Acer support line which is actually a company called Albion. Rep said it was attacks on the network.

CMD Netstats says there are 10 active connections. Is that bad? I've only got the netbook and my phone connected to the internet at the moment.

    I haven't done this yet:
Logging in to a Sky router is just http://192.168.0.1/sky_index.html

I will uninstall McAfee but just want to be sure my broadband is ok first.

What should I do next? Idiots guide level please :)

Oh dear. Of course McAfeee will continue to run, but it won't update the antvirus patterns once the free two months are up. So that leaves you vulnerable to any new infections.
You should not be running 2 AV's on the same machine, they will conflict.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I specifically used Google Chrome as it was meant to be the most secure browser. As I've said, I've used it a few times and not gone on any dodgy sites or downloaded anything.

Wouldnt say a company that sells your browsing data on is MORE secure
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)
  • Step 1 - uninstall mcaffee from control panel list of add/remove programmes.

Step 2 - Install Microsoft security essentials which is a free AV with good results. (can always change later)

Step 3 - Log into router and see what devices are connected to it. This could include devices such as sky boxes, wireless printers, phones, playstations/xboxes. Anything that uses the internet in your house basically.

As for chrome being the most secure i would disagree. Fastest yes but not the most secure. For me i would use firefox with a few addons such as adblock etc installed.

Netstat is only showing the connections that your laptop is making. It is normal to see numerous ones for this Mine are shown below

    Thanks everyone!

Would you believe, after un-installing McAfee everything is running much quicker!

I must admit, I'm angry that Acer think it's ok to allow a product on its system that does this and then have a support hotline that tries to flog an unnecessary fix!
