If you want to keep your devices secure, then I'd start by removing McAfee and using a decent free AV program, such as Avast, Avira, or MSE.

Funnily enough, I rang the support because I'd heard that McAfee severe slows down performance. The free trial has expired but it's still running and keeps flagging up messages so I want to get rid of it.

The assistant did show me me a lot of 'events' on my netbook that were supposedly the result of attacks.

I specifically used Google Chrome as it was meant to be the most secure browser. As I've said, I've used it a few times and not gone on any dodgy sites or downloaded anything.

I'm still a bit confused about the guy saying it was my network that was infected and that changing my Sky password won't make any difference.

    Support for what!?
Events Viewer always shows hundreds of errors, this is what scammers use to try and get you to pay for spyware.
McCrappy isn't just a resource hog, it's a very poor performng AV program. The majority of people seeking help with infections on here have McCrappy installed.
The other good option is Kaspersky-free with Barclays online banking.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Don't confuse password used to log in to the router interface - with your wireless security key.
I thought Sky "locked" their routers but penrhyn's earlier post on changing the wireless key seems the sensible first step ie do a factory reset then log in and set a wireless key that only you know -and don't give it to anyone you don't trust implicitly !!

McAcrap caused us loads of problems when I worked for Sky BBand, especially when Vista came out.
And the McAfee 'expert' you were talking to was talking out of his hoop!..
    Do a 'netstat' to see how many outgoing connections you have;
Click Start/Run and type CMD. In the command window type NETSTAT /?.

It could be your PC is clogged up with stuff.I run CCCleaner every week & you'd be suprised how much faster my browser is after this is done.

I suspect he was talking balls. Anyone can log into their router and change the SSID and password.

    I agree

I suggest the OP first of all rings Sky and gets an agent to troubleshoot PROPERLY for a slow connection. From what he's posted the agent did NOT follow the proper process and jumped to a few conclusions.

Actually, the way I read it is he hasn't called Sky at but in fact rang the McAfee helpline.
  • That's how I read it too.
