Apply really haven't thought this through from a consumers POV.

Why should I but the phone, then have to buy an extra again?

I see nobody has considered teething problems with the 5.0

Samsung S3 is just too big for a phone. It's like carrying an ipad around. I actually laughed at it when I held the S3 in my hand.I'm retiring at 55. You can but dream.0

If he's a heavy user of his mobile and he's looking for something that could last him a bit longer, then I'd strongly recommend the iphone5 or indeed the 4G LTE version of the Galaxy S3 (which is not yet out).
The current Samsung Galaxy S3 will NOT support 4G speeds (the next generation of data downloading, so to speak). Nor will the iphone 4S. As a 19 year old I suspect he'll be a big internet user on his phone and when 4G LTE is rolled out later this year I'm sure he'll appreciate the speed improvements.
Bottom line is that if he's after a nice phone that does the job then the other opinions here are on the right lines and I would agree. But if he does want his phone to include this new high speed downloading which I think will make a big impact on mobile phone usage and enjoyability, then the iphone 5, Samsung Galaxy S3 (LTE version, not yet released) or the Nokia Lumia 900 are the three big players at the minute.0 -

I would not worry too much about the phone having LTE at the moment, if you buy a phone with it great but don't buy a phone because of it.
With only one network only having LTE for almost a full year, it you would only be able to use it on EE and live in an LTE area to even be able to use it.0 -
a vote for samsung s3
although in the usa the s2 is 4g compatible
apparently the whole reason apple changed the plug is for faster data transfer
but in reality its a way to make people buy ipods as lets face it who wants an ipod when you can have a phone with the same storage capacity and does everything the ipod can and more0
