Mobile phone numbers are not secret. I can think of any number of ways in which it could have been obtained.

What was the purpose of the call? You can always call your cc company and ask to opt out of receiving marketing/sales calls from them but you cannot opt out of receiving calls from their collections department if that is who called. The fact that you are a home owner is not relevent here.

They have done nothing 'illegal'. You will not get compensation and the police will not go round and arrest them.

Im not after compensation, i just want to know where they got my number from. You say you know a number of ways to get a numbers, what are they ? because i can only think of one.
If they have done nothing wrong or illegal why wont they tell me ? They must know how they got my number, every time i ask, i get told,
    'i can't tell you that'

I doubt they do. Certainly the front line staff won't know how your number was collected and appended to you account and depending on how their data warehouse is maintained, I'm not sure anyone could.
  • Easiest way to stop those calls.
When they phone and ask 'Can i speak to Mr (name)'
You just reply with 'I think you have the wrong number'
To which they will say 'do you know Mr (Name)?'
You say 'No i do not know anyone by that name'
They say 'Do you know (address)?'
You Say 'No sorry, never heard of it'

Then they apologize and say they will remove this number from the file and thats that :)

I did this with Capquest and they left me alone ever since :)
I can't put an image here?

Stopping repetitive telephone calls even from collection agents is a simple matter of sending them a nice letter preferably by signed for delivery asking them to stop telephoning you. After that if they continue it's considered an unfair business practice by the OFT and may be taken up by Trading Standards after you have tried your luck with their complaints.

Sorry, but the above is nothing more than an aspiration at best. The OP is already in a relationship with the bank, and they are permitted to use any contact means they think fit, so asking them to stop telephoning you is a first step, but yo cannot complain to anyone if they do not.

Assuming there is no existing relationship, a 'nice letter' is about all you can do. The OFT do not represent individuals and are not a public regulator in the sense you expect - they are there to nurture competition, and have made their stance very clear. As for Trading Standards, again, they do not pursue on behalf of individuals, and stopping a non malicious phone call is low priority even for them.

If they continue, switch to a number they do not know. The problem is solved in an instant.

Thanks, i'll do that, thats a good idea
But i would still like to know where they got the number from, its a private number and i dot think companys should be allowed to go and get private information on anyone, who do they pass/sell it on to ?

Just login to your mbna account, 'Manage Account' and update your contact details and preferences. who knows or particularly cares how they got the number , you may have even put it on the application form... but again dont lose too much sleep over it.
