Hi, can anyone help. My credit card company (pre 1997 credit card) has phoned me on my mobile phone, i have never gave them this number and they are not telling me where they got it from, i have wrote to them asking them how they got my number but so far i haven't had a reply. What i want to know is, can they get my number from a 3rd party, are the allowed to do it ?
They have my home number, but dont phone on that, only my mobile number which they have not got from me and should not have.

All i want to know is are they allowed to get information, ie. phone number from a 3rd party ?

Thanks

All kinds of places they could have got it from. I am regularly getting letters from banks asking for any information I might have on previous occupants who they are unable to contact. Maybe a landlord or new tenant knew your mobile number and passed it on. Perfectly legal.

Maybe you need to stop running from your debts and pay what you owe?

Hi, i'm not running, they are not chasing me. I'm also a home owner, i just would like to know where they got my number from, (they aren't telling me) because they should not have it. I dont give this number out to just anyone and would like to know where they got it from. It should not be a problem to tell me if its perfectly legal, should it ? I did 1st ask about 7-8 weeks ago

I suspect you've already thought of this - but did you ever call them from your mobile?

I imagine that banks' systems keep a record of caller IDs each time you call - for security purposes. So maybe the stored numbers are visible to call centre staff.
  • ........Or does your bank hold your mobile number - could they have got it from this if your card is also with the bank?

Mobile phone numbers are not secret. I can think of any number of ways in which it could have been obtained.

What was the purpose of the call? You can always call your cc company and ask to opt out of receiving marketing/sales calls from them but you cannot opt out of receiving calls from their collections department if that is who called. The fact that you are a home owner is not relevent here.

They have done nothing 'illegal'. You will not get compensation and the police will not go round and arrest them.
  • Have you ever paid with your credit card, the phone bill?

Stopping repetitive telephone calls even from collection agents is a simple matter of sending them a nice letter preferably by signed for delivery asking them to stop telephoning you. After that if they continue it's considered an unfair business practice by the OFT and may be taken up by Trading Standards after you have tried your luck with their complaints procedure.

Where they got your number from is anyone's guess. The first port of call is typing your name and town into Google and see what you come up with. Websites sometimes store information on sites which are not linked to from anywhere but are nevertheless insecure and have been found by Googlebot trying its luck.
