Surnames for children

Woman in the couple (we'll call her Jane Smith) has a previous child (age 7ish), we'll call him James Woods (he has his father's surname).
She's now pregnant with new partner, Mike Skywalker.
She wants to call new baby Betty (fake first name too!) Smith so that James doesn't feel left out.
She is engaged to new partner and will be Jane Skywalker after they get married, leaving the children as James Woods and Betty Smith.
Interested to get other people's thoughts on this...
It does not make sense to call Betty Smith when her father isn't Smith.
The children should be James Woods and Betty Skywalker and wife should change her surname on marriage to Woods Skywalker.
It could be worse - the boy could have been called Luke. :rotfl:A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0
