    Hello folks

I have a Tesco credit card, I spend £2500-£3000 per monthevery month on it but always clear the balance in full so do not incur anyinterest. I have been a customer for about 10 years I guess.

However this month I screwed up and forgot to make the payment,I now see that I’m being charged £12 missed payment charge and £72 interest; fairenough I knew the rules.

However as I consider myself to be a pretty good customer I contactedthem and polity asked for a goodwill gesture, they agreed to waive the £12 but notthe £72 interest. I escalated it to a line manager who also refused. I explainedthat I felt hard done by and as result would take my business elsewhere, and assuch they would win the £72….. but loose the commission they make on my monthlyspend which would put them on a looser by month 2…. Not a very wise business decisionbut they wouldn’t budge.

I will write to their complaints department pointing thisout, but am I being unreasonable? Am I wasting my time?

BTW…. Anyone recommend a good reward card??

Entirely your fault. You could have easily set up a direct debit for at least the min amount. Hopefully a lesson has now been learned.

Assuming their gross profit is 0.5% (don't forget there are others taking a cut here), they'll lose £180 a year...that's if you were to continue to spend at your current level, and you might not.

What do you think their net, operating, profit will be on your account when they factor in other costs such as account management (online, systems, answering the phone when you ring, postage, etc)? I'd hazard a guess that they'll start to lose out after a year...not by "month 2" as you suggest.

And with lenders needing more 'coverage' for funds provided these days, I'm sure Tesco would rather lend some of your (£4K+?) limit out more profitably to other, interest earning, customers.

You're smarting, understandably, but put it behind you and move on to the next provider. Loyalty counts for nothing.

Thanks for your responses folks, especially Spadoosh’scomment “Please educate yourself on howbusiness should work”…. That made me smile because I guess that’s where I’mcoming from.

In my business it’s quite commonfor a customer “to try it on” sometimes with fair reason and sometimes not….. I(or those whose job it is) then make a business decision to either dig their heelsin and win the battle, or choose to lose (hopefully correct spelling this time) the battle but win the war by keeping the customer long term.

Clearly we know who are our goodcustomers based on their payment histories, and believe me we bend over backwardsto keep them. We worked out once how much it cost to bring anew customer into the business and it was scary.

Goodwill gestures, applied sparinglyafter a bit of thinking have allowed us to keep many good customers, speculateto accumulate!!

If you've ever done any 'negotiation' training in business you'll have been trained in win/win.

At the moment, both yourself and Tesco have 'won'. You've won £12 and they've won £72 (plus some more residual interest next month).

What you're saying is that's unfair. Maybe I agree. But to reimburse you the full £84 (plus the residual) is still unfair...to them!

Now perhaps people would be more 'supportive' if you were asking how you could 'split the difference'? Why not ask them to meet you half way? Or is it all or nothing for you?

Tongue in cheek?...because OP already has such a card. ;)
  • Put it this way... Tesco have been providing you with credit for 10 years. If they accidenatlly made a mistake with your statement and overcharged you... would you waiver this error and pay it anyway as a gesture of good will?

    No? I thought not!

“You've won £12 and they've won£72 (plus some more residual interest next month)” isn’t win-win!! That’s likescoring 1 goal when the other team scores 5!

Me paying what I would have beenexpecting to normally pay, and Tesco keeping me as customer for another 10years would be win win!!

I will escalate my case withinTesco and will of course let you know if it’s been a wasted effort. However the Santander 123 card looks prettygood and should net me a tidy bit of cash-back and is on standby.

That's because they have better players than you, or know how to play the game!

But you've completely missed my point about meeting you half way, or somewhere towards half way. And that I may agree with you on that point. Never mind.

Now that you've made that statement, despite all that has been said to you on this thread, I can answer your thread title question...

Yes, you are being unreasonable. :)
