Well if you had an entertainment budget then alcohol could go in there.... just saying... I sometimes use this budget for extra petrol if we go somewhere for the day, or to buy a dvd.
Alcohol, petrol - it's all fuel to get you where you want to be ;).

I'd definitely have a budget for entertainment and you could have wine in there. No point in being unrealistic - if you're going to drink wine then account for it somewhere and don't feel bad about it.

  • Sorry for butting in here, but do you buy wine? If yes, why not make your own? A pair of demijohns, a dozen or so bottles, corker and corks and some other basic bits are all you need. A reasonable kit will cost about £8 and make six bottles. Source soft fruits from hedgrows like blackberries and the batch cost is merely the yeast or about £1 for six bottles! Really easy to do, and ready to drink in a matter of weeks. Just a thought and saves a LOT of money if you drink it regularly. I have just packed up home-brewing as we were not drinking enough to warrant it and my tastes have moved onto whiskey and only occasionally, so no longer cost effective, but when we did drink wine and beer regularly, it works out much cheaper, good quality and you know exactly what's gone in your brew - no nasty chemicals and the like.

how much time does it take to keep it ticking over Dave? I've toyed with the idea of buying OH a beer kit so he can have a go at making his own

  • Hadnt thought of that. Might purchase DH a kit for his birthday, I bet he doesnt even realise yet that he wants one!

Think I have particulary harsh on the December grocery budget and perhaps need to add in additional contingencies like entertainment. As when I think about it, we do consistently spend each month on something, this month its my spa day, then Madagasgar live and hopefully snowdome. I did steal that money out of savings pot though as we would have gone away if not.
I suppose its even worth having a kids school budget for breakfast club, their 1 school dinner a week, plus trips. I taken into account music lessons and to an preemp swimming lesson renewal.

DH filled my car up on Saturday, then had to do his own today. Fortunately his is rarely needed so be ages before needs again.
