Lap top has actually arrived. just home from work and DH job was to rebook delivery slot for next week and he'd sorted it, put phone down, knock on door, lappy arrived. Haven't undone box yet as needed to ebay check then now nipping for a bath... building the tension....so PJs first then box opening.

Calfuray.. thanks for this - appreciate. I have only looked at kindle and kindle hd in terms of price as still scoping, current amazon prices are 129 and 199 but have friend who paid 99 a couple of months ago so wonder if price may drop??. Hadnt looked at nexus but definitely open to suggestions. my old ereader was a cheapy binatone read me, and i bought discs and loaded through my lap top. My ou is pdf docs or word. Muchas gracious.

Right nipping into bath, my return via new lappy..

Kindle Fire - £129 (139 to remove ads)
Kindle Fire HD 16GB - £159 (169 to remove ads)
Kindle Fire HD 32GB - £199 (209 to remove ads)
    Galaxy Nexus 7" 16GB - £159
    Galaxy Nexus 7" 32GB - £199

So basically, Kindle Fire HD and Galaxy Nexus are pretty much same price. For the uses you're describing, you could do perfectly well with either. You may find Nexus slightly faster, but again depends how sensitive you are to it. Kindle has an extra 5GB storage via cloud drive.

Fire HD has been reported as slower for general browsing, but if you install Chrome or Dolphin browsers it is near perfect. I don't want to say too much and bore you!

Let me know if you have any other questions and I hope you get a good one in the end :)

I suppose the biggest consideration is books. I have a few discs with lots of books on, can i still pop them onto a kindle? My mate reckons theres a load of freebie amazon ones but when not studying I do read a lot. So will it become a none starter if books expensive? also planned to load sky2go to get the wifi (although not sure how it works yet)

    Thanks again

Okay, do you know what format the books on the discs are? Since neither the Fire or the Nexus have an SD slot, you would need to see if you can transfer to them via USB, or you could stick them on cloud space on Amazon and use via that.
Nexus still has access to Amazon markets, so both ones will still allow you to get free books. I've downloaded some freebies from Google Play before too.

And no probs :) I like gadgets waaay too much :rotfl:
  • Is Amazon the best place to pick up a kindle? Have looked in a few places and all seem to be stuck at the same price. Is the extra space worth the extra money? I get the feeling that the HD is worth having, is this right? Really struggle with buying gadgets as although I love them Im nervous about making costly bad decisions.

    Thank Q!!!

DH now being allowed time with new lappy so on old faithful!

Yes, Amazon is manufacturer. They are pretty much same price across board. Amazon's customer service are top notch, and their returns policy is decent, so it's worth checking that out.

Extra space is completely up to you. If most of your books are on discs already, then all you need to do is move them over as and when you need them. If you purchase them from Amazon and you run out of space, nothing to stop you deleting it off your device and it'll stay on your online library so you can re-download it if needed.

Fire HD is good, yes. Display on it is meant to be incredible. As before, only cons is some people complain browser is too slow - easily fixed by using different browser.
Remember and factor in extra cost of mains charger, £18 I believe?

Another thing is, if you have a PC World/Dixons close by, you can try out the Nexus there before you buy anything and see how you feel :)

I honestly think the books aren't that cheap on the kindle... I also think it would be easy to get carried away and just click to buy them her and there..... But, maybe that's me.

I had the kindle app on my ipad, so I've just transferred the books across that I had on there for the time being. I've searched for a couple of books and they seem more expensive compared to if I was to buy a paperback fom tesco.

I've only really used my kindle a few times since I opened it a week or so ago and it is really nice, but as mentioned mine is just the basic £69 job. I have my ipad mini for the fancy things.....

Good luck with whatever you decide....

Is the charger just a usb connection? Can I just use the ones we have to charge usb stuff (like the ipods on holiday as cant dock? ) Have a work phone which is a blackberry and it comes with a usb charger with the usb/mains thing, would that do the job?
Think it may be worth a looksy at the nexus. Thanks, next time i drop the kids off for music i pass a pc world and ill pop in and take a look.

Unlike my DH I dont have that much music as Im very happy to listen to whatever although do like a bit of bublee however it would be nice to chuck the photos on it. Im thinking 16gb is a good amount anyway???? I would be happy to delete frequently as dont tend to reread stuff.

    Thanks again Calfuray!!!!!!

Thanks Lula, I think the ipad might be a bit expensive for what I want to do. I was tempted for the standard kindle but its the extra stuff like wifi I quite like as I could put my ou stuff on it and then take out and about.
Can I pop none kindle stuff on? do you need to convert?

Am i right by think that the kindle can read it out loud? (sure theres a more technical way of expressing that but its late and Ive worked 3 x 12.5 hours shifts!!) I thinking maybe some of the stuff I have to read I could potentially listen to on the way to work??

In my slighty bonkers MFW brain, im thinking that my TCB can pay for most of it with lovely big tc pay out (obviously gift chosen by self from DH for very small teeny weeny birthday) and I can then OP that amount as would have spent it anyway. Double birthday Joy!!

It's a micro USB connection that runs off main, so as long as you have an appropriate charger that's fine. The Amazon one just says it charges ultra-fast :D

And I think you are thinking of audiobooks?

I thiiiink, the Nexus might be better for what you are describing, just worried that the Kindle may not do everything you need OU wise.
But have a play and see what you think.
