    Virgin Media does not cover everywhere with it's cable network. In non cable areas they use ADSL, see their website.

    I did a bit of research on the free routers, apparently it was only for telewest and not ntl (cableforum website)

    Shopping Tips

    As well as being ntl:Telewest, i.e. cable, Virgin Media also encompasses what was Virgin.net which provided broadband (ADSL) via a BT line like other ISPs.

    I can see that this may lead to confusion when someone says they have broadband from Virgin Media.
